This is for the longer-term wrestling fans. When I got into WWF back around the time that Orndorff turned on Hogan, Adrian Adonis came into the federation within a few years and was prancing about in women's clothing. Prior to that, he was a legit tough guy in NWA and other feds. All I've learned is that he got on the bad side of Vince and that's how he earned his pink gimmick.

Anyone know enough to shed light on the story there?

In this interview,

http://thesmartmarks.com/ artman/publish/article_644.shtml

Paul Orndorf seems to feel that it was punishment for all the weight that Adonis had put on.

I always wondered if there were more to it, but give Adrian credit. He ran with the gimmick and was at least an upper-midcard heel for a long time as the "Adorable" one.

Everything I've heard points to the same conclusion Orndorff draws, that it was punishment for Adonis going from big guy to blob. But hey, Adonis had passed away before I became a fan, so if any of the real long term fans remember a different story I'd be interested in hearing it too.

THat is the story I have always heard as well, that he was signed, and when he showed up was basically Playboy Buddy Rose JR. So, Vince stuck him in the gimmick and he actually ran with it and made it work for him. Its a shame too, because I recall him back in the old Southwest Championship Wrestling days as being very entertaining in the ring and a legit tough guy. Hell, him and Dick Murdoch making the East West connection, in those days they didnt get much tougher.

Remember, HE was the first UNDISPUTED WORLD CHAMP! (sarcasm)

Pretty sure he and Murdoch won the WWF tag belts from Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo. Twenty years ago so I may be dreaming. The "feminine" Adonis drew as much heel heat as I ever remembered, and his beatings by Piper got some of the loudest cheers ever. I understand he was a legit tough guy, despite his in-ring persona.

Obviously, the Adorable One was doing his gimmick before any of us were smart. I loved his deal - I was a big heel fan and absolutely loved Dirty Dick Murdoch at the time, so I was an Adrian Adonis fan as well. But I didn't know any of the backstage stuff. I heard the Orndorf story that was quoted and probably accept it as gospel. But, a lot like Dustin Rhodes, another fairly tough guy, Adonis made the gimmick work. I saw him go up against Big John Studd at a gym at Valparaiso University back in 84, 85 - one of my first WWF shows - well, I saw wrestlemania II - I can't recall if it was after that or before - and Adonis was awesome. He pranced around and John Studd acted like he was amazed. I wasn't a mark, so I knew it was entertainment and all - knew it was an act, so Studd killed me that night - and Adonis was killer funny. At one point Studd did the old run into the corner move and Adrian stepped out of the way at the last moment and patted Big John on the Butt - both John and the crowd went WILD. I can't remember much of the rest of the match except Adrian won with that sleeper he used at the time -

Capt. Redneck and Adonis lost the tag belts to the U.S. Express. I think they beat Johnson and Atlas for the belts in mid-'84 and had an extended run before losing them to Windham/Rotundo.

Adrian Adonis was in the WWF before "Playboy" Buddy Rose.
As Vince McMahon said during the preliminaries of Adonis'
challenge of Bob Backlund in January, 1982, "he sure loves
that leather." Adonis did not make any overt gestures at
that time, but like most WWF heels of the era there was
an undercurrent of "something isn't right" about him.

To provide context, watch Ken Patera, who no one would
ever have thought of as a homosexual, during 1980-1981.
When the Grand Wizard knelt down in front of Patera to
help pull off his pants, the crowd would go bonkers
and the Wiz would play back to them. The horrible
Philly announcers pointed out that Patera ran "like
a sissy, like a girl" when he bailed out of the ring.

So Adonis' character was always sorta gay, but in a less
overt "butch biker" gimmick than the "flower shop" version.

Adonis was always heavy, surprisingly so given his thin
legs and his phenomenal agility. Even in 1981 he looked
like a character from Sgt. Pepper's with the thin legs
and the barrel shaped gut and torso. That said, Adonis
was one of the best bumpers and workers in the early
eighties, both on his own and carrying partner Jesse
Ventura or later teaming with Dick Murdoch.

I watched some earlier WWF programming on video, adn I always liked seeing Adonis wrestle. I'm surprized that the commentators on WWE programming don't say stuff like "shades of Adrian Adonis" whenever Rico is on the programs...especially with his mind games and whatever.

There are a LOT of different things the WWE announcers should say but don't, and that's hardly the least of them.

I just wonder sometimes who decides what they say and what they don't - whether it's Vince pushing the buttons and feeding the earpieces of our 4 main announcers, or if they just opt not to mention things like that simply because they don't think we'd get it, or if they have some sort of LIST proclaiming what wrestlers/gimmicks/whatnot they're not ever allowed to mention/should mention a lot.

I think Vince is in their ears a LOT during the shows. Some things that Cole and Lawler say, you can almost hear it coming from Vince.

Because it'd be the wrong Adrian.

Rico is emulating "Exotic" Adrian Street, from his character to even the make-up he wears.

Just a little story about Arian Adonis:

A former neighbor of mine had an interesting story about Adrian. Apparently, when he was in his late teens he got a job as a swimming pool maintenece assistant. Supposedly he used to regulary clean Adrian's pool (and sneak his friends in for late night parties while Adrian was on tours). He said all sorts of crazy things happened, even once draining the pool and skating it with his pals. Adrian fired him when a neighbor reported the trepassing. Mike (my neighbor) isnt much of a bullshitter, but you never know.
By the way, Mike didnt watch wrestling at all, and the only ones he could probably name off is Adrian Adonis and Hulk Hogan. When he saw my collection of video's, his first question was if I had any Adrian video's. This supposedly happened about 20 years ago.

Couldn't help but think of the video of Randy Orton bumming a smoke off a fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpVTQg3qFoo Maybe these two should have a Marlboro on a Pole match.
