There's an advertisement for accelerated dial up in my area. Considering that I don't have high speed access at home (and I admittedly don't need it) the idea of service that runs at seven times the speed of dial up for C$10 a month sounds really good.

However, I'm not sure how it works, or if it's good. I'm going to get it up and running on the weekend.

My question is: is it good? And as well...have any Canadians here have used Distributel for their Internet service?

Thanks

Basically they work through compression. The earlier forms were basically just compressing HTML (which many websites do anyway), but now some of the more advanced services also compress images by reducing the quality further. Will you notice a difference? Probably, on some sites, but not on others, and it won't speed up the transfer of regular files.

Netzero 3G, for example, says that they "accelerate"

Web pages - HTML markup and JavaScript
Graphics including JPEG and GIF images
Text
Email including POP3 and Email on the Web

while the following will travel at normal speeds

Streaming media, audio and video files
Secure pages, such as those used for online banking and credit card forms
Files and attachments such as music or digital photos

I used Socket Accelator for a bit before getting DSL.

Basically, you could choose how much images were going to be compressed any point. So, if you knew you were going to be browsing without worrying about images, you could super compress all images. Very bad image quality but pretty good quality. But if you wanted to actually see images, you could make them a little clearer, with slower browsing.

The Accelator also stored more browsing information on your hard drive, for easier and faster access when you go back to a site.

Unfortunately, any Internet work not related to your browser wasn't affected by the Accelator (downloading backups to files you own with BearShare, any chat programs, etc). Overall, though, it was worth the extra money until I could afford high speed.

I wonder about compatibility with messenger services, like MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and AIM...and with third party IM clients like Trillian, actually.

I'm getting set up on Saturday with it, but in all actuality, I thinkI can get it all lined up without their tech support people on my own. Hopefully. All that's needed to be done is downloading the accelerator programming.

Also included is something called V.92, which allows to pick up calls while online. Not sure how that works, or if I read that correctly.

I use Mozilla, and had problems using the Accelator because it was set up for IE. So, just watch out for that if you don't use IE. I had to manually configure localhost as a HTTP Proxy under Mozilla preferences before it would work.

So far so, ummm...so-so

The software isn't really GOOD, it mostly comresses graphic files. That's all I've really noticed.

I have Firefox, Mozilla, and IE on my system, and all it works with is IE. I rarely use IE, and mostly use Mozilla.

As I said though, you might have to reconfigure Mozilla to work with the accelaration by changing the proxy settings.

My accelator didn't work with Mozilla automatically.

I really like Macs. My fiance has a Mac Mini and it is very nice. The only thing I'm worried about is that it seems like there are so many more powerful PC's out there for the same price as Macs with more memory, bigger hard drives, and more options.
