Copiously.

Drank some this weekend (quite a lot actually, hurrah for belated birthday celebrations), tried the sugar cube on fire method that everyone talks about.

It looks neat.

First of all don't have more than a few shots of it. I'm 180 lbs and usually only have 3, maaaybe 4. Too much and you'll just get drunk and not enjoy its other more subtle effects. Now for methods, I drink absinthe in one of two ways.

1) Mix all that you plan to drink with some ice water and sip it from a nice big glass. The taste is easy to get used to and its pretty enjoyable if you have quality absinthe. I never mix any kind of juice with it, but I suppose you could do that as well if you think you would enjoy licorice + fruit flavor.

2) Get some sort of screen, metal filter, infuser, or simply a spoon. Place a sugar cube on it, and put over a glass. Very slowly pour a shot (of however much you want to slam back) over the sugar cube. If you do this too fast, you won't get much sugar dissolved in the liquid. If you get good at this, you can usually dissolve the entire sugar cube into about a shot.

I really prefer the 1st method because if I'm paying 60 or so bucks for a bottle of liquor, I want to be able to enjoy its taste. But if you can't get used to or enjoy the taste then go for the 2nd method.

HBK: Fine, but I ainít weariní no fruity tassels.

God bless the men of 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard...good luck, and come home soon.

Maxim did a great article on absinthe in August 2003 (and it's even pretty much work-safe!)

Keep in mind, however, that absinthe is legal in Europe, but illegal in the USA. (Which makes me wonder what the hell it was I drank that tasted like licorice a couple years ago at the Old Absinthe House in The Big Easy...)

Ahhhh! My second favourite liquer! (I prefer tequila, though...)

It's legal in Canada. It can be picked up in any liquor store here.

I like to drink it ice, ice cold...in a frosted glass with a couple of ice cubes.

Persoanlly, I can't handle any more than two shots of it.

I'm still rather confused on this. Isn't absinthe an actual poison? The type that'd kill you? And this liquor form is just a watered-down version? Or is the toxic idea now debunked? Are there any webpages listing the science behind this?

When I lived in Calgary, I found it at a liquer store near the Brentwood station, walking distance from the London Drugs there.

Hope that helps!
