I swear I can hear "Dixieland" playing during the song, in an almost ringtone-like MIDI sound. Am I really hearing this, and if so, why is it in the song?

Thanks, this is the most random topic of the day.

Yes, you're probably hearing "Dixie." It's a sound effect (electronic toy maybe? There weren't "ringtones" in the 80s - and there was barely MIDI), but it's not the only one in the song. Me, I'm partial to the jet fighters. TCHYOOO TCHYOOOOOOOOOOO Anyway, to guess WHY is to ask why they included a piano or a guitar - just accept their artistic vision, or something.

I remember the liner notes in the box set talking about this song - they don't mention the sound effects but they DO say that the instrumental they recorded is only about half the length of the song - they ended up looping it and playing it twice.

Also, from my own fuzzy memory (aka I own the LP {it's in a box somewhere} and also I used to hear it all the time on KROQ 15 years ago) I believe that sound effect is in the LP version but not in the single version - or is it the other way round? Same deal with the wacky echo effect in the middle of the song - it's in one version but not the other.

It is the start of Dixie (First 11 or 12 notes) and I don't recall which version is which but I think you are right. If you would like, I could bust out the Clash On Broadway and figure it out I think.

I would guess the single because it stood out in the video.

Thanks everybody. At least I know I'm really hearing it and it's not just ringxiety (en.wikipedia.org).
