| #3 Posted on 26.3.02 1959.44 | We have the same problem here. In fact, our WB affiliate DID carry Smackdown last year, but dropped it THIS year. I've never gotten a reply as to why, but based on the station ownership, I'd say God. This hasn't stopped them from airing Buffy though.
But I have a friend with DISH Network, so we spend Thursdays at her house. I have DirecTV and actually considered getting Dish, but when I went to their website, the "Superstations" package has disappeared from the programming options. So I'm wondering if that means they've removed it from being available.
I wouldn't even mind if the WWF and DTV got together and came up with a seasonal "Smackdown" package...maybe $19.95/year to get Smackdown, maybe even the LIVE feed. | WAPU Bandit

| #5 Posted on 26.3.02 2113.17 | Ive always thought the WWF would consider that not every UPN affiliate airs Smackdown, maybe there is a plan for more affiliates to pick up Smackdown, now. I dont know why more UPN stations dont show it considering that its one of the highest rated shows on UPN. Ive also heard that because the cable ratings system is diffrent, actually Smackdown has more viewers than RAW, so maybe they feel like theyre not losing anything.

| #6 Posted on 27.3.02 0109.49 | It's not just a matter of Smackdown being pre-empted on UPN affiliates. I live in State College and had a hell of a time at RAW last night. But it WAS hard to cheer when Vince drafted Chris Benoit and others because we don't have a UPN affiliate on the cable dial, period. We have on WB but it's out of New York and isn't exactly... receptive to ideas from a cable subscriber in backwater PA.
That's why I don't like this whole concept of a split. I won't get to see a vast majority of the things I like most about the WWF right now (I'm looking at YOU, Kurt Angle). On the other hand, I get the angles that are bombing badly (NWO) and a bunch of no-talent giants (does this really need an explanation) that can't work in the first place.
The only explanation I can come up with is that the WWF wants me to end up paying to see these guys on PPV if I can't see them for free on live TV. But it doesn't work that way. If I don't have the opportunity to see them on the tube, I'm not up to speed on the angles involved. I'm not interested in the feuds underway. And I'm not going to pay to see a product that I'm not "sold" on. Maybe I'll go down to a local bar and check it out... but that's the bar's financial gain, not the WWF's.
Long term, I like the idea of a split roster with separate touring bodies. But I liked it better the first time around, when that separate touring body had its own name and its own identity; WCW. But since the InVasion tanked, we're stuck with this.
Thank God I'm moving in another month... to a town that has a UPN affiliate. So long, RAW. | Triple Preperation H

| #7 Posted on 27.3.02 0139.28 | If you are referring to going to a bar to catch a WWF PPV, the WWF gains TREMENDOUSLY from that. I used to do a wrestling radio show once a week locally (until the WWF pissed the Program Director off), and we tried several times to organize outings at certain bars and restaurants. It was very difficult because in order to have the right to pump a PPV into your establishment, you have to pay for it as if your place was over capacity. That is, if you seat 200 people, you would have to buy 215 PPVs or something like that. Finally a Hooters started carrying them, but more so to generate repeat business. They probably sell enough wings and booze to make up for it, but it is expensive and the WWF makes a good deal off of bars showing their PPVs.

I live in the same area you do. Time Warner here shows Smackdown on channel 16 now at 7pm on Thursdays.

Boy am I happy to be a New Yorker with Dish Network. It sucks to see your favorite talents only once a week but maybe they'll do Raw recaps on Smackdown and vice versa. Or even turn Heat and/or Jakked/Metal to Raw and Smackdown recap shows. It sounds far-fetched, yeah, but you never know.

I hate to tell unsubstantiated rumors, but I heard that there's a possibility that both Heat and Jakked would become highlights shows, with Heat showing highlights from Smackdown, and Jakked showing highlights from Raw, the idea being that people who don't have cable might be able to see Jakked, as it is a syndicated show, and people who don't get UPN would be able to see Heat, as it's a cable show. Again, I have no idea about the accuracy of it, but we can hope! | The Vile One

| #11 Posted on 28.3.02 1557.37 | Look you guys, if this doesn't pan out, we know that WWF will drop this angle pretty quickly. I have DirecTv and they recently picked up a local affiliate of UPN, UPN20. However b/c of Rockets games and the like it seems to get pre-empted quite frequently now. The WWF would have been better off if they just stayed on USA, and that's not an opinion or a point of view, that is a fact.
So what will the WWF use Metal and Excess for if Heat and Jakked become highlight shows for WWF Raw and WWF Smackdown?

That would not have mattered in this case. Smackdown has always been on UPN and they knew the distribution was not complete to every single market but the viewing numbers still exceed Raw. It hasn't made a huge difference in viewership as far as Raw goes. From things I have read the number of viewers has remained the same. I used to have DirecTV and never watched Smackdown since UPN wasn't available.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I never watch Jakked or Metal, but aren't they somehow related, like having the same matches or something?
And I like the idea I heard of using Excess as a talk show for both sides, enabling wrestlers from different brands to cut promos against each other. | Rudy

| #15 Posted on 28.3.02 2333.55 | Yes, Jakked and Metal both feature the same matches, but are designed to air at different times.
Jakked has more "adult" announcing, and fewer bleeps in the video packages. It's meant to be run Saturday Nights between 10PM and 5AM.
Metal is toned down, and has cut-ins to Chris Leary in the studio for some of the recaps. It's intended to run on either Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon. Locally, I get it at 11PM Saturday Night, opposite Excess, and right before Jakked runs on a different station. Go figure.
What's odd is that for the past several weeks, both shows have had Coach as an announcer. On Metal, he does color with Kevin Kelly, and on Jakked, he does play-by-play with Chris Leary.
The matches are shown in a different order on each show, and Jakked usually cuts out some of the entrances.
Jakked was better when Michael Hayes was doing color, since he had an amazing heel announcer vibe going with Coarchman. Plus he used the word "ass" thirty or forty times in one Rikishi match. Leary is just sort of there.
According to that show on BET, Coach now hosts nine weekly shows for the WWF, counting international versions of Heat, Livewire, and Superstars. I don't hate Coachman, but why so much?
Kevin Kelly should be on more. And they need to bring Hayes back.
One bit of trivia, for a few weeks up until he left, Vince Russo was the color guy on Jakked. He stank.

| #16 Posted on 29.3.02 1318.15 | Funny note: the station that carries Jakked and Metal here in Baton Rouge runs them back to back. So you have the "main event" on one show, wait a minute and then it's the curtain jerker on the next.
