First of all, I'm a long time reader of this forum. It's great.

Most people want TNA to do the "Monday Night War" to get ratings. How about... instead of Monday... Thursday Night War!

Smackdown isn't doing too good. Why not find a network, and go for free and Thursday nights. They could read the spoilers (because it's pre - taped), and Impact or another show. I don't want to see WWE fold, but I want the best to come out of it, like the late 90's RAW.

What do you think?

Turner owned both WCW & TNT, so it wasn't much of a stretch to get Nitro on TNT Monday nights opposite RAW on USA. When RAW started, WWF was a proven commodity thanks to the NBC specials and numerous successful pay-per-views. The same applies for Thunder on TBS (Turner owned) and Smackdown on UPN (proven commodity).

TNA hasn't established itself enough to prove a good gamble for a network.

I like TNA but the only WWE show it could go against right now is probably "The WWE Experience".

As long as they are on Fox Sports Net it would be extremely difficult to do, as it would be pre-empted numerous times in local markets due to NBA, MLB or the NHL (insert laugh track). WCW had been on cable for 20 years prior to Nitro if one were to go back to the Crockett and Georgia Championship roots, thus they had a significant fan base from the Saturday Night show that they were able to transfer over to Monday Night. TNA doesn't have anything close to that. The interesting thing for TNA is how the RAW television negotiations go this year. If the WWE were to leave Spike in September for USA or Lifetime, then Viacom could become a suitor for TNA, as they did have ECW prior to acquisition of the WWF and might wish to maintain the demographic.

If Viacom ever loses WWE they would snatch up TNA in a heartbeat. Spike TV has five hours of wrestling a week, which is more than even TBS ever had IIRC. Wrestling is clearly something they value, and that would be a good chunk of programming to fill each week. There are only so many episodes of VIP you can show.

TNA won't be getting on a network any time soon, especially not opposite Smackdown. Thursday night is a big night for TV, and SD almost always comes in fifth or sixth out of six networks in the ratings. In other words, a network would have to abandon programming that is already beating WWE to bring in a lesser program with even lesser name recognition to make this happen. A nice idea, but it really doesn't make sense for anyone not involved in TNA to have even a small interest in making it happen.

WWE programming had real value to Viacom when business was white hot a while back. If WWE goes somewhere else I honestly don't see Viacom finding that much appeal in TNA, who at present are producing 2 hours of TV per week and only half of that is an A-show so to speak. Trying to draw the target audience with that promotion as opposed to WWE just doesn't seem worth it.

Is there any chance that Impact will get a second hour anytime soon?

Not with the ratings it draws (average of .30 to .35).

How would you suggest they fill that time if they did get it? They don't have enough guys on the roster to make that work.

Matches that last more than four minutes would be a start, but I agree that they don't need or deserve a second hour.

But -- they did 2-hour PPVs every week for a couple of years! Without commercials, even!

Was there some filler? Sure! Would there be filler if they had a 2-hour show now? Again, sure. But at least now it'd be free filler.

TNA could go two hours easily, Impact does a poor job of getting their talent over with 4 minute matches. Someone did say to me, Impact was getting 1.0s in the ratings and on Foxsports thats pretty damn good even the .35 is good for a wrestling show on Friday afternoons. The problem with TNA is as long as Jeff is the champ and the X-Division is buried under people like Hall and Nash then they will probably won't be here this time next year. TNA needs a locker room mutinity and some hot angles then maybe one day it will compete as of now they are WCW at the end and that WCW could even compete with a lagging ECW.

Losing the WWE won't kill Viacom, it will just crush the networks they are on. Even though Smackdown gets 3.0s they are still beating out WB, Fox and on a good week ABC in their timeslot and this is the most contested night on television. Plus, with Buffy gone, most of their new shows tanking and Enterprise not being cancled due to idoit fanboys even though its running up the cost for the network, all UPN is a high rent BET. If Smackdown does leave UPN, the only good thing to come out of it is they go beg Joss for a Faith or Willow spinoff from Buffy, because I have got to know what the hell happened at the end of Angel if it kills me.

Raw is usually number one or in the top five shows on cable, you can't replace that with Joe Shomo III, UFC or Strippella. TNN needs Raw more than Raw needs TNN. Vince can shop that show back to USA, FX and a number of other cable who will say damn the FCC, I want this show. Plus, since you pay for cable, FCC jursidiction is a gray area at best. I do think TNN will give Vince what he wants or USA will bring it back home along with Heat and Velocity, so the network would lose about 5 hours of programming that were doubling what they originally had in those spots. It would be borderline retarded to let Raw or Smackdown go.

Well they need more wrestlers, better Pay-Per-Views and getting rid of Scott Hall,DDP,Nash and Jeff Hardy. Maybe they should give the title to Monty Brown becouse in my view he's a realy good face when he whants. Also get rid of squash match's may attract a bigger fan base.

Would that have been one of the voices in your head?

Some of you need a serious dose of reality. Isn't TNA still PAYING FSN for this airtime? Talking about getting a second hour like there's even a whisper of a chance that it's happening is recklessly foolish. Thank your lucky stars they can even afford the one hour, if you're so inclined, but come on.

The above statement is "borderline retarded."

I don't know how many times we have to go over this... Ratings don't pay the bills. Ads do. Wrestling still has some of the lowest ad rates on television. Vince is praying he can get more than one party interested in his television because without artificially driving up the rights fees, how much money is there REALLY in the WWE package? These days they don't even have the added value of the ticket sales...they keep going down, so the ticket prices keep going up in an attempt to keep the revenue high (and trick the shareholders, apparently).

You know, I don't want to be the doom and gloom guy here, but some of you are in dire need of rose coloured glasses removal.

Like I said, I heard someone say it was in the 1.0s, doesn't make it true. I agree the ad money is probably not there right now, but to say ratings don't mean anything is kinda riddiculous, as well. If ratings didn't mean anything Twin Peaks would have finished its run. The ad revenue is been stale for all TV shows for awhile unless some new show comes on then everyone flocks for it for awhile then when the show goes luck warm, they drop out. Raw has been on the air for over 15 years in a prime time slot. I don't see Playstation, X-Box and Gamecube dropping out since most of the big sellers are wrestling titles each year. Does Vince need some more ad revenue, sure and so does every show on Television that isnt consistantly in the top twenty shows on televisions.

The problem is the WWE's creative is starting to hurt WWE financial, because the product on TV is not where it was three years ago. The hot angles are not there, the wrestlers are not close to being the next Hogan, Rock or Austin. The fact that Vince feels Brock isn't worth the time should tell you about the current crop of wrestlers coming up. Vince needs a kick in the head to the creative department, but what I don't know. They did everything this year that people wanted, they gave the titles to Benoit and Eddie, they elevuated new talent like Orton which fans have been screaming about for years. Granted, putting the belt on JBL and HHH have been proven disasters, but they are going long term planning and making it interesting. I just think no one knows what the problem is and saying the end is near is silly.

But, I do think the two PPVS a month has been a success for them. Individual they buyrates have been terrible, but if you add them together and cut out the expenses, its been a nice chunk for them. So, for the month of October, they had their two lowest buyrates between 150,000 to 170,000 was the rough estimate. Combine those together those and you have 300-350,000 buyrates times that by $35 a pop and Vince grossed over $10 million dollars, you subtract fees and such, they still probably grossed over a million dollars. You add in ticket sales, plus merchandise and such, they are probably netting over $3-5 million a month. The DVD sets alone have gotten them off to a hot start for the year end sales.

Raw is the number one show on cable and saying oh ad revenue is going to be the one to do it in when USA and TNN are going end up in a bidding war over it is silly. Smackdown is the flagship of UPN show me one hit show that network has where it can compete in a competive enviroment and don't say Star Trek, because it costs them more to put it on and it will probably be gone by next year, fan write-ins be damned.

TNA will probably not be around next year, because they have no real direction or leadership. The show is slopped together even though they have a ton of talent that if they had a good PR rep could get them a better timeslot than 3pm on Friday afternoons than they could maybe one day compete. As of now TNA will face oblivion long before the WWE.

Vince on the internet has been portrayed as an idoit king for too long. He knows what to do when his back is against the wall. Is his back anywhere close to being near a wall? No. Raw and Smackdown have had steady ratings for almost three months now and even have been hitting high levels when Rock shows up. The merchandise sales have been through the roof for ECW, Benoit, Eddie and Flair. Even this year's Wrestlemania was a huge success to the point that the wreslters recieved a nice cut. Do they need more ad sales, sure, will they be able to get them when they really really need it, yes. To say, its all over when a bidding war is about to or even going on as we are taking about it as we speak is insane.

Well, now, I saw something about that, too -- but it should be noted that what I read said that Impact was hitting 1.0's in some markets.

I don't have a link, but it was almost certainly from 411, because I rarely read other sites. Who knows where they got it from.

A fan,

Do you have any figures to back up your advertising assertion? I don't either, but I don't imagine that TV ads are struggling across the board. However, since I don't have any figures, I won't parade my assumptions as truth and set them us as the cornerstones of my argument.

TNN needs Raw more than Raw needs TNN.

Maybe, maybe not. I believe it's the Spike TV deal where WWE gets all of the advertising revenue and the network gets to run a few promos. Spike gets the cachet of having the WWE run on it, but the only benefit comes from viewers who stick around to watch programming that has commercials that flow back into Spike TV.

UPN, on the other hand, gives WWE a production fee and solicits its own ads, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for explaining why. Was the whole card good, or just the fights already mentioned? My girlfriend said she might tape it for me, but I told her not to worry about it. If it's as good as it sounds, I might have to change my mind.
