Don't know if any other markets are doing this, but a crappy Denver ClearChannel station is running a "pick the playlist" gimmick this week. It's a half-rock, half-classic rock station. In the old days, I suppose you'd call it an "AOR station".
They're (supposedly) running through all of their songs, alphabetically by song title, and allowing visitors to their website to rate them. The gimmick is only active from 9-5 pm Mountain Time. You can rate the last 10 songs they've played. The list is updated, so you can drop by every so often and rate different songs.
They require you to log-in and create a profile. However, they don't send a validation email, so you can enter a bogus email address. The security's not too tight on the site, so I'm sure someone with too much free time could crack their log-in "security".
Anyways, it's fun to jump on there to slam Metallica and Beastie Boys. Two bands that they've played almost non-stop since 1992. It's also funny to see how people are acually giving favorable scores to stuff like Tesla's "Love Song" and Danger Danger's "Naughty Naughty". It's a fairly awful station, but it's fun to mess with them. Since you can enter a bogus email, you don't have to worry about falling into some EVIL ClearChannel mailing list, either.
I do remember WMMR here in Philly/Jersey doing the same type of "We'll play 1000 songs and have your feedback on them." I don't remember if they went as far as your Denver station though.
WMMR actually has Dee Snider on the radio at nights too which is just weird.
RORY: So, is this party Grandma's having going to be a big deal? LORELAI: Not really. The government will close that day. Flags will fly at half-mast. Barbra Streisand will give her final concert...again. RORY: Uh-huh. LORELAI: Now, the Pope has previous plans, but he's trying to get out of them. However, Elvis and Jim Morrison are coming and they're bringing chips.
I would heartily agree that music needs another great rock band to step up, and I also agree that the "posers" you name aren't particularly talented. But MushroomHead aren't rock musicians, they're noisemakers. Big difference.
