I think I remember someone asking for sales data for the video game consoles. This data is courtesy NPD, who track most (but not all; for example, they don't have access to Wal-Mart sales) video game sales.

So here it is (all quantities in thousands):

So there you have it. Best-selling consoles of the year so far are Wiis and DSs. The XBOX 360 is still the best-selling home console of the current generation, with 5.5 million units sold (the Wii has 4.02 million units sold, and the PS3 has 1.74 million units sold).

Wow. I can't believe the PS2 outsold the PS3 by nearly a factor of 2. I mean, the PS2 is at the end of it's lifespan, it shouldn't be doing twice as many numbers for the year as its successor.

That probably has as much to do with the price as anything, though. A new PS2 is like $100. It was an easy choice to replace my dead PS2 with another one rather than spring for the PS3.

Holy fuck shit motherfucker shit. Read comics. Fuck shit shit fuck shit I sold out when I did my job. Fuck fuck fuck shit fuck. Sorry had to do it....

Revenge of the Sith = one thumb up from me. Fuck shit. I want to tittie fuck your ass.

I suppose I didn't really think about replacement consoles. With the size of the PS2 install base, it makes sense that there would be a lot of replacements. But it's still surprising that there are twice as many people who are picking up a console on its deathbed as are picking up its replacement.

I'm one who bought a GBA...because I still play original Game Boy games. If there was a way to play them on my DS, I'd do so. I still think there's a way, I just haven't found it.

I've seen 16 movies so far this year: Because I Said So - (2*); Borat - (5*); Children Of Men - (4*); Die Hard 4 - (5*); Evan Almighty - (3.5*); Fantastic Four 2 - (4.5*); Hairspray - (5*); Harry Potter 5 - (4*); Knocked Up - (4*); The Last Mimsy - (4*); Mr. Brooks - (4*); Resident Evil: Extinction - (3.5*); Shrek The Third - (3*); Spiderman 3 - (3.5*); Superbad - (1*); Transformers - (2*)

There isn't. The DS plays Game Boy Advance games, but not Game Boy or Game Boy Color games. I'm sure emulators exist, but that won't help you play the actual cartridges.

The Wii alone has outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 put together, even with the continued scarcity of the system. The combined sales of the two current Nintendo systems is greater than the combined sales of the PS2, PS3, PSP and Xbox 360.

As a long suffering Nintendo fanboy, I'd just like to say y'all can suck my dick. Thank you and good night.

Seconded. The last year has been a relief from a long haze of Gamecube-related gamer hazing, and it's been more than swell watching Nintendo's comeback.

Now they just need to ramp up production for Christmas. I know controlling supply is their thing, but nuts to that.

So much for that idea. Nintendo of America president admits that they will not meet demand during the holidays. He almost seems to be bragging about that point, but I am not sure why.

It doesn't surprise me, and I understand why, but it would be nice to see everyone who wants a Wii this year be able to get one. Nintendo is notorious for their holiday shortages (the DS was ridiculously hard to find last season; we had more requests for it than the Wii) and the ability to land this wonderful console just as a lot of the killer games are released could cement its dominance.

Well it's long term thinking in my view. They have pushed up production as much as they can from the plants they have. To do more would mean opening new plants. So they meet demand now, but as we all know it will slow down in time, they have to shut down those new plants. That's never a good thing.

I'm more concerned about them getting more adult games out there. They have great party games and great Nintendo properties out or coming out. I just wonder if it will hurt in the long run if they don't expand beyond that. Maybe not. Clearly they were smarter than everyone with the whole Wii thing to begin with.
