The Phillies get a huge steal.

ESPN.com - MLB - White Sox trade starter Garcia for two Phillies pitchers

The pitchers in question are Gavin Floyd and the ever-present Player To Be Named Later. And if anyone actually thinks the White Sox got a good deal out of this, read this and despair:

Floyd was 4-3 with a 7.29 ERA in 11 starts for the Phillies last season before being optioned to Triple-A on June 3.

"I think Gavin's going to be a little bit of a late bloomer," Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle said.

Late bloomer? I'm sure Sox fans are filled with confidence.

The player to be named later is Gio Gonzalez, who the Sox shipped off last year in the trade for Jim Thome. Sadly, he's the better of the two pitchers they're getting.

I'd type more about my thoughts on this, but I have to go patch the hole I put in my wall upon hearing about this deal.

I'm not sure I get this deal either, but not following the Sox as much as others, I am betting that there's a lot I don't know. Apparently, Houston is close to obtaining John Garland.

The most confusing thing to me is that while there have been talks all week of a White Sox-Phillies deal, it involved Philly sending Aaron Rowand back to Chicago. The Sox want him back in the worst way from what I've heard.

From a Phillies perspective, is this still one block of a larger overall deal?

Thank god that rumor seems to have been shot down. If they traded Garland for Taveras and Buchholz I might have killed the next person who walked by.

Look on the bright side, ChiSox fans....at least McCarthy now has a spot in the rotation. Right? Right?

The Phillies have quietly built up one of the best rotations in the majors. They might be contenders for at least a wild card next season.

McCarthy in the rotation is a good thing. Trading Garcia could have been a good thing. Trading him for a bust and might be prospect who got shelled in AA ball is not a good thing.

As a Phillies fan, I'm excited.

Floyd might be a late bloomer, but I doubt it. The Phils threw just about everybody at him to get him to be a productive pitcher, and it just didn't seem to work out. I know even Johnny Podres worked with him.

Floyd's problem seems to be that he has the stuff, but he's not mentally tough enough to overcome obstacles on the field. I thought he tended to panic if anything went wrong (and by something going wrong, I mean two men on base, nobody out, nothing Earth shattering), and he seemed to pitch scared. They tossed him to the wolves, and hung with him, but he kept his ERA hovering around 7 until they demoted him.

I believe so, yes. They've got six starters now (Garcia, Lieber, Myers, Hamels, Moyer, and newly acquired Adam Eaton) and I'm sure somebody out there is going to need a starter. I still think Gillick wants to get rid of Burrell in left, and he wants to strengthen the bullpen. Maybe somebody would be interested in Burrell and Lieber (or Burrell and somebody else) for an outfield bat or a good reliever or both. They supposedly did well in the Rule 5 draft today, so maybe they just need a bat, though I'm uncomfortable with the current bullpen the Phillies have.

Talk is that negotiations with Milwaukee regarding a Lieber/Kevin Mench and some reliever deal have cooled a bit.
