My school is really pissing me off...

Ever since I've gone there, I haven't been trusted to do what I do. I'm enrolled in the theatre arts department, and I've also gone to the Hart Wrestling school.

Being that I'm more interested in wrestling than theatre, I like to encorperate my ability as a wrestler/stunter into my work. They won't let me. Even doing a simple front-bump just to WARM UP, they, my teachers and collegues, get mad at me for doing something 'dangerous'.

And now I had a beautiful monologue planned out for the upcomming Cabaret that people in my program have been organizing, and mine's been scrapped because it involves wrestling, the need for a union, and people's growing distaste towards the art of it and demanding bigger and sicker bumps... and so at the end, I perform a big bump which I've done MANY times that I feel very confident about. (About a 5-6 foot forward bump onto two open chairs)

I'm getting tired of it... why can't they trust me to know what I'm doing?

Society is too 'safe' these days... look at elementry schools... those kids aren't even allowed to play games like 'red rover' anymore.

I wonder if there's any corrolation to that and the growing bullying problem in school...

Lord, I'm sick of it...

High school or college? And what's the "need for a union"?

He's in college...

Part of his wrestling monologue involved the need for a union in wrestling.

You're welcome...Ender.

My guess is that this has something to do with liability, if they let you do bumps, they could be found liable if you got hurt. Which could mean lawsuits, which they would rather avoid.

They would rather just avoid the risk all together, since acting would generally not be considered a dangerous activity.

Sounds to me like 2 separate things on top of each other. And the response to both is the (eternally helpful, I know) "try not to take it personally."

Having your creative process crapped on is something that anybody in a creative endevour has to get used to. As lousy as that is. It sounds like they don't like your content -- unfortunately that's like having a script rejected or an audition curtailed with a "Next".

I 'xpect that ges7184 is dead-on right about their objections to you incorporating (what they consider) extreme physical stuff into your performance. Unfortunately, your transfer credits from the Hart Wrestling School probably aren't recognised by your school. If they sanction it, even tacitly by not stopping you, they could be considered at fault. (I wonder if they'd object to somebody from the gymnastics team incorporating a tumbling run into their performance.)

I do sympathise with your frustration though.

Have you got any other venue available to do your piece? (Maybe a place that hosts poetry slam sorts of things -- anything like that?) Something that's more "You're an adult -- we don't have a responsibility to protect you from yourself"?

I agree insurance is taking away a lot of things today. Of course I feel we have only our selves to blame, especially in the U.S., for sitting on juries and handing out ridiculous settlements.
