A wildfire that started five days ago in a North Carolina wildlife refuge about 70 miles south of Norfolk is still spreading smoke throughout the Hampton Roads region as I type this, and officials speculate that pollutant levels might reach Code Purple-- the highest possible danger level-- in this area by today.

The fire in North Carolina has burned 1,438 acres. There's also one raging in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

I'm relieved to be far away from the fire, but... damn, the smoke. It's pervasive.

I remember when that happened a few years ago.

I lived in Chesapeake and it was palpable when you went outside, both the smell and pallor in the sky.

Also, ash layering up on your car on really bad days.

I'm in Central NC and Friday the haze covered just about everything and as time went on choked the very air out of our lungs as it coupled with the dry heat.

Pretty staggering to believe that you can be about 100-some miles away and be that affected to that extent by it.

Speaking from experience (San Diego fires) try to stay indoors as much as possible especially if you have any asthma or allergy symptoms, and after everything clears up, change your car's air filter.
