CBS has just started airing a TV adaptation of Stephen King's 2009 novel Under the Dome. I liked the novel quite a bit so I watched the first episode this morning.

Most of the characters look nothing like they did in my head, but everything seemed spot-on so far. This first episode was obviously all setup, so there's not much else to say other than that I'm looking forward to watching this progress.

Anybody else watch this, planning to watch it, or avoiding it for some reason?

Watched it, liked it a lot. Brian K Vaughn did a good job with the show.

I wish it wasn't on opposite RAW and hopefully Kabletown has it on demand or I can watch on CBS.com... My interest is entirely based on BKV's involvement.

The first episode is on CBS.com. Not sure if this will just be for the pilot or if the whole thing will be on there.

I did not read the book but overall, I felt pretty underwhelmed. Except for the cow halved by the dome; that was pretty cool. Overall, it felt just like one of the many Lost ripoffs from late aughts. Everyone has a secret, everything is a mystery. I realize the pilot was set up, but it didn't exactly grab me by the throat and dazzle me either. Not saying it was bad; in fact it was better than most of those Lost ripoffs from the late aughts. And yes, I know celebrated comic book writer and former Lost scribe Brian K. Vaughn wrote the pilot.

On the plus side, the actors were good, even when the script did not necessarily service them to their benefit. Disclosure: Mike Vogel is a friend and another friend of mine auditioned for the female deputy - and she would have been a lot less bland and way more dynamic (and attractive) than the lady they did cast opposite Sheriff Frank Lapidus.

I'll watch a couple more and see how it goes. (And I'll refrain from the many and obvious Simpsons Movie jokes here.)

Under The Dome the Novel had very little to do with the dome itself. It's much more a brutal Lord of the Flies type of story. We have no idea how this TV show is going to play out, but the novel does not have much of a that Lost vibe where the mystery is the focus.

I didn't even know this novel existed.

I used to read every new King book, but just couldn't keep up and gave up in the 90s sometime.

Stephen King's letter to fans about the changes to Under the Dome on television. (stephenking.com) Mild spoilers.

He seems to be on the George RR Martin and Robert Kirkman train.

Ok, this show is definitely taking a turn into Lost territory. It makes sense because the plan is to have this be an ongoing series whereas I had initially assumed it would be a single season miniseries. It'd be impossible to recreate the story of the novel because while it is a long book, the timeline is fairly short and things escalate quickly. It's also probably too harsh a story for a CBS show.

Anyway, the 3rd episode was mediocre at best. I'll probably still watch the series because I like the source material so much and it'll be amusing to see where the two stories intersect along the way. If I'd never read Under the Dome I doubt I'd bother watching this show though.

There's a pretty big spoiler in there that makes me much more interested in this show now.

Oh, I think the show's fucking terrible. Episode 3 was horrendous. The writing! The acting! Ugh.

This show falls squarely in the Revolution/Terra Nova category as opposed to the category of Good Television Shows.

Agreed. Episode 3 was so bad, I thought I was watching an episode of post-hiatus Revolution.

I have not seen the third episode yet, but sounds like it was pretty bad. I've liked the series so far though, never read the book. I'll probably keep watching.

I like the fact that the logo for the thread is the Simpsons' movie logo...nice touch.

Fought my way through the first 2 episodes and only because I had nothing else to watch when I was working out at 3:45am. Now that I have the scouting report for episode 3, I think Food Court Wars might be in order instead.
