http://www.yle.fi/uutiset/news/2010/01/former_mp_tony_halme_dies_at_47_1359550.html

"Former Member of Parliament Tony Halme has died at the age of 47. Police told YLE that no foul play is suspected in his death. Police would not yet confirm the time, or cause of death. The late-edition tabloid Iltalehti reported in its online edition that Halme was found dead at home.

Halme, a professional boxer by training, achieved fame on the Finnish version of the Gladiators television franchise.

He was notorious for his outspoken opinions, served for one term as a Member of Parliament of the populist True Finns party, after winning a landslide of personal votes in the Parliamentary elections of 2003. In his campaign he put a special emphasis on opposition to more immigration.

Later in 2003 he was hospitalised following an incident in which he had fired a pistol in his Helsinki apartment, apparently while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The incident brought him a suspended prison sentence and a fine.

In October last year he was arrested for driving while under the influence of illegal drugs. Charges were still pending in the incident when he died.

Another one for Mero's list..

Is there any truth to the rumor he was going to be champ at WMX?

We were only talking about this guy last night, in the context of people who had performed as professional wrestlers as well as fighting in the UFC.

RIP

    RIP

From what I understood, he was supposed to be fighting against Luger at WMX for the title. But I'm not sure if he really was going to be champ at any point. In any event, he was getting pushed into a main event role it seemed and was supposed to fight Tanaka at the Royal Rumble before suffering an injury and leaving the WWF. The timing is wierd because Scott Keith has been doing retro RAW recaps as of recently around this time and mentions the last days of Borga in the fed.

He wasn't a great wrestler to watch, IMO, but he did a lot in his time. Anytime you can say you've been a pro wrestler, a gladiator, a UFC fighter, and a parliment member, you probably lived an full life. RIP

I think that's one of those weird RSPW made-up things that get repeated because they came up in Scott Keith's original PPV reviews.

Not happy to see him pass obviously but just about the only thing I remember about him was REALLY hating him as a kid because he ended Tatanka's undefeated streak. Pinned him with a foot or a pinky, I believe. And cheated to do it! The nerve!

Finnish tabloid Iltasanomat says it was suicide. There was a gun found next to Halme that he didn't have license for.

I swear I read somewhere that he kicked Hogans ass legit backstage one night and that's why he was shown the door.

Either way, 47 is WAY too young to go.

Doesn't seem likely, since Borga debuted in July '93 and Hogan started sitting out his contract shortly after that. I suppose they could have crossed paths, but he wasn't let go until January '94. That's kind of a long time to wait to fire somebody for kicking the ass of a guy they were pretty unhappy with.

Well, it was from a vague memory I had from reading it online so who knows if it was near correct or not.

I never watched him wrestle, but jeez, ever since Brian Pillman, it just seems we've suffered an ongoing nightmare of wrestler deaths that seems to have no end. Hell, you don't even have to think too hard to go pre-Pillman on this one: the Von Erichs.

Yeah, but this guy barely had a wrestling career. Some wrestling deaths are certainly attributable to "the lifestyle" but I don't know if you can really blame Vince or the business for Dino Bravo screwing off mobsters and getting assassinated, or JYD rolling his car, or Earthquake getting cancer, or Yokozuna and Bossman being hundreds of pounds overweight for practically their entire lives and having their hearts give out. A six month run is really a cup of coffee. Next people will calling Ray Combs and Kid Rock's midget wrestling deaths.

Yoko was probably going to be morbidly obese regardless, but Bossman had the pro wrestling calling card of the enlarged heart.

I can't believe that 75% of the Foreign Fanatics are dead. Jacques Rougeau is literally the sole survivor.

I beg your pardon? Borga may have been in the WWF from July '93-January '94, but he began in the Universal Wrestling Federation in October of '90 and wrestled until at least December of '96. So I think we can call him a "professional wrestler" after six years.
