He really is just an awful person to put out there these days as he is played out beyond all words. I tried to watch it a couple of times just out of principle, but it was just too painful.

Seriously, it pisses me off that on Cable TV the voices "from the right" are such extremists as Pat Buchanen (I consider John Kasich, Robert Novak, et. al. extremists too, but I suppose your milage might vary there), while the voices "from the left" are such pansy-ass DLC centrists as Paul Begala and Bill Press. We need more bombastic, unapologetic, far-left personalities on Cable News. You can keep Donahue, Press, Begala, and even Carville. | PalpatineW

Novak is sedate, Carlson is calm; Carville and Begala yell and demagogue until they are blue in the face. And I don't know if I'd lump Buchanan in with Novak. The man is practically his own political category.
I ask again, Moe, what constitutes a real "voice from the left?" I'm sure Lenin's still well-preserved... | MoeGates

| #5 Posted on 26.2.03 0019.38 Reposted on: 26.2.10 0020.42 | I think it's fair to say that Pat Buchanan is as far right as Ralph Nader is left, judging from their most recent campaigns. I'd say the most right wing Ex-Congrespersonn (I dunno, Bob Dornan?) and the most left wing Ex-Congressperson (I dunno, Cynthia McKinney?) would be equivilants. Now, Dornan is on Cable TV all the goddamn time. Can you imagine McKinney being a regular guest on a cable TV program? Or Nader hosting Crossfire (granted, even I would rather watch Buchanan rather than Ralph "snooze" Nader)? Or Al Sharpton getting his own show like John Kasich? The suits would never let that happen.
You are right that Begala and Carville yell a lot more than Novak and Carlson. But Novak and Carlson are far more right of center than Begala and Carville are left of center. Novak is on the far right of Republican party, Carlson (who I actually like a lot, and wrote a good article about what Dems need to do to get back in the mix) is definitely solidly in the Center-Right of the GOP. Begala and Carville are on the right wing of the Democratic party.

I have met Ralph Nader. Trust me, he is as boring in person as he is on TV. Also had the weakest handshake of any person(male of female) I have ever met.

That's the funniest thing I've heard all morning. Zell Miller is the right wing of the Democratic Party. Begala is solidly in the left, though Carville is somewhat closer to the center. | redsoxnation

Nader guest hosted Crossfire a few weeks ago. Al Sharpton might not get his own talk show, but Jesse Jackson had one for a few years on CNN. | vsp

Much like Lincoln Chafee would be considered the left wing of the Republican Party, whereas he should be considered part of the left leaning wing of the Democratic Party. And the scary thing is this 'genius' is in office for life. | PalpatineW

| #11 Posted on 26.2.03 1900.22 Reposted on: 26.2.10 1901.38 | I actually liked listening to Dornan on the House floor late at night during the "open forum" time (damn I forget what they call that now). And yes he has been on a number of cable shows, Hardball being one of them.
Personally it's kind of sad to see Donahue go. Yes I almost always disagreed with his opinions, but his willingness to get into very sticky issues and ask tough questions, while at the same time offering more than ample time for conservatives and those who disagreed with him to respond, actually made for some interesting TV. It seemed sometimes though that Donahue was a glutton for punishment: Some of his guests would come on and talk the poor guy into the ground and Phil would have nothing better to do than raise his hands and enlarge his eyes, like only he can.
Even Falwell was able to handle Phil. Maybe that's why they canned him. In the end though, maybe Donahue was just too "80s" and after the nostalgia for him wore off people tuned out. Personally I think he made a mistake going back to the live-"Phil running through the audience" format. He should have kept it like a Hardball show format, except more left of Chris Matthews. When it went back to the stlye of his old show, Americans probably felt like they saw enough of that and got bored real quick. (After all, he ended his original show quite some time ago. Personally I didn't think the guy had enough of a public presence since his long retirement to survive on TV today. It would be like if Johnny Carson came back and tried to do a talk show again--would he be successful?)

Being from Atlanta and knowing lots of old-time Southerners, and believe me, Miller is off this group, you will find that they are all Democrats who are right-wing Republicans. They will vote Democratic no matter what, but their ideals and beliefs are Right-wing. And Moe Gates, if they EVER gave Cynthia McKinney her own tv show, I would watch it.... out of pure hatred for the woman. So chalk me up as one Republican who would watch her. The only problem with giving her a tv show, is one has to have the vocabulary and grammar to actually speak correctly. | OlFuzzyBastard

While "Donahue" does badly trail both O'Reilly and CNN's Connie Chung in the ratings, those numbers have improved in recent weeks. So much so that the program is the top-rated show on MSNBC, beating even the highly promoted "Hardball With Chris Matthews."
Although Donahue didn't know it at the time, his fate was sealed a number of weeks ago after NBC News executives received the results of a study commissioned to provide guidance on the future of the news channel.
That report--shared with me by an NBC news insider--gives an excruciatingly painful assessment of the channel and its programming. Some of recommendations, such as dropping the "America's News Channel," have already been implemented. But the harshest criticism was leveled at Donahue, whom the authors of the study described as "a tired, left-wing liberal out of touch with the current marketplace."
The study went on to claim that Donahue presented a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war......He seems to delight in presenting guests who are anti-war, anti-Bush and skeptical of the administration's motives." The report went on to outline a possible nightmare scenario where the show becomes "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity."
