I just moved mine over to my girlfriend's and thought it might be nice if we could play something together, rather than her just watch me gathering artifacts and blowing the shit out of bugs with a flamethrower on Metroid Prime.

I played Super Smash Bros. Melee at my little cousin's house last year and wasn't too impressed with it, but I was really just mashing buttons and my cousin sucked.

Is Mario Party 4 any good? Any other games that may be fun?

Super Monkey Ball is not bad. Simpsons Road Rage is ok if you can get it real cheap.

Have either of you tried Animal Crossing? Might I also recommend TimeSplitters 2, Super Monkey Ball 2, and Mario Party 4.

I'll also shout out for Super Monkey Ball 2. Target, Bowling, and Race are awesome mini-games. The first one had a better golf game though.

Hmmm... is that the game with the crazy little monkey running around in a ball? Is that two players?

Super Monkey Ball 2 is a favorite at our house. You can play it in single player mode, but I think the mini games are a lot more fun. You can play those in single player or up to 4 players at once. I would definitely rent this and see if its your thing if you haven't played it yet.

I like Mario Party 4, but I can see how people could hate it. It takes a long time to play through a 3 player game with the default setup - I'm thinking like 1-2 hours. That's if you read all of the instructions, etc. It can be an chore towards the end if you play the full game out.

Super Smash Bros. is ok, but its really just a fighting game. I bought it used for $20 and I'm not sure I got a great deal.

I too am looking for suggestions on multi-player GC games. I hear Gauntlet legacy is bad, anyone play it?

I'm not really helping the thread much (other than saying that Bloody Roar is a way better GC fighting game than Super Smash Bros) but I thought I would mention this...

My girlfriend has a GC and we wanted a second controller for it but didn't really feel like dishing out the 25 bucks. I read about two different PS2 Dual Shock to GC controller adapters on IGN and ended up getting one on eBay for like 7 bucks including shipping, and I must say that it works flawlessly. Just a tip for those of you crossing platforms and not trying to break the bank on accessories.

Also, a question... having played a lot of Mario Party 1 and 3 for the N64, I assume Mario party 4 is pretty much the same... well, is it? Also, do the mini-games tend to lean more towards "annoying" or "fun"?

Well that depends.

My roomate and I had quite a bit of fun playing through Gauntlet DL for PS2, and he can't stand PS2 games (it's the only one he's ever sat down and played for more than 10 minutes).

It's really at it's best as just a straight up beat 'em up (the puzzle elements are REALLY lame and so is the fact that you have to go and find all the rune stones and special treasures to advance is lame). I think it really shines as a four player game because it's extremely faithful to its arcade brother, which was really only fun as a four player game.

There's alot to it, so don't expect to beat the whole game (we spent varied amounts of time over several weekends). Also, don't expect it to revolutionize gaming, it really is just the arcade game on the console, but just as some fairly mindless entertainment, I'd say it's probably worth $15-20.

Just edited to add:

Some of the hidden and unlockable characters are tremendous (it's really too bad that they made them so inane to unlock, with the treasure hunt mini-game). But if you're having a good time with three other people, the first time somebody becomes a chicken is guarenteed to draw some amusement.

I'd say they've finally weeded most of the shitty games out of Mario Party, and most of the games have something resembling fun in them. (Of course, there's still a few BANG THE A BUTTON FOR TWENTY SECONDS games mixed in.)

I've actually found that Mario Party 4 is better with two people. It could be that the combination of people I tend to play 4 player games with are a bit immature and inexperienced (hence, I kicked all their asses and win all the time), but the most fun games have been with two people. That way, it always works out that its either both of you teamed up against the computer, or its each of you with a computer player against each other. With three people, whoever winds up with the computer is usually screwed as the other two people can talk and cooperate.

And Super Monkey Ball 2 is fun too. I like the bowling, and the monkey fight isn't bad if you don't have Smash Bros. Target is the easiest and the best ever! The golf game is just beyond me though.

Just another person vouching for Monkey Ball 2. The mini-games have something for everyone. I am partial to crazy lane monkey bowling and monkey race grand prix. I played a friend at monkey soccer and we had a grand old time.

Mario Party 4 is a great game, and I like playing the one player game just fine. But of course it is better with more, but one person can have lots of fun.

For the record, I HATE the button mashing games in MP4. I'm glad they mixed in some just plain luck games (I love the "pick a lever and hope not to get blown up" game).

I just have to say that the *pick a lever and not get blown up* and the *pick a cannon and not get shot* game are my two FAVORITE MP games. My brother and girlfriend always argue about who gets to press the "trusty yellow" lever. Usually she beats him to it, and when he finally does get it, it isn't so trusty.

Mario Party isn't the same without the fishing game... sniff.

Try Tony Hawk PS if you don't own it for another system, or if you can't get the hang of it on the Dual Shock. Oddly, I'm GREAT on the GC versions and only mediocre on the PS2 version.

Well, she violently hated Super Monkey Ball 2. We played the bowling game, she didn't like how the monkey's ball hopped over the direction sweeper, she hated the racing, she didn't like the game where you try to punch each other. And she thought the billiards were "retarded."

"What's the point?" she kept asking. "I liked the other game (Animal Crossing), because there's at least a point."

Ah well, hope Blockbuster has Mario Party next week.

It's a Monkey in a BALL! How could she miss the inherent coolness of that? And the racing game is like a free shareware Mario Kart!

Oh well.

We're still trying to understand why cute monkeys in balls could provoke such hatred.

As for the main game - I found it to be quite frustrating. Kinda like marble madness, but cuter.

I beat the main game, but there were several moments where I seriously considered how mad my friend would be if I pitched his GC out the window. The one with the 8 rings and the one with the spiral that straightens out to the goal immediately spring to mind.

There's a point to Animal Crossing? I think trying to punch a monkey or win a race has more of a point than wall-papering your house, but I guess I'm just more about immediate gratification (and monkeys).
