I'd like to start by stating that I'm a fan of the Driven series. It usually airs in re-runs late at night, and if you're an insomniac like me, it gives you something to do. Plus, it's fairly interesting to hear the stories, even if you don't really give a crap about them. Anyway, I was actually REALLY disappointed when I heard they were going to do one on Rock, because, honestly, he has NOTHING to do with music (unless you count "Pie"). VH1 has usually stuck pretty close to their musical roots, so it was kind of dissapointing to see them doing this.

Anyway, it was fairly interesting, in case you didn't watch it. Though mostly stuff we already knew. Dwayne growing up in the shadow of Rocky Johnson, feeling isolated from his dad because they moved all the time and he'd always be away working shows. Dwayne becoming a highschool football star only to get hurt in college and get out of football. His beginning training with his dad and his subsequent "discovery" by Pat Patterson. Then his Flex Kanava days, how everybody hated that name, his debut as Rocky Maivia, his fall from grace, and his rise out of that and into the movies.

All in all, it was interesting at the very least to hear somebody else's perspective that you usually don't hear, Rock's friends, his family. The collection of WWE guys that they got was kind of sketchy. They got Flair to do the "History of Wrestling" piece, and Vince, Patterson, and Steve Lombardi to do the "The Creation of the Rock" segment which was ok, but the only other guys they really talked to were Angle and Jericho. I'd have thought that they would've gotten some people with more "mainstream" cred for such a mainstream show. Maybe I'm underestimating non-fan's knowledge of Angle and Jericho, though.

Rock doing Hogan was unintentionally hillarious, but it would have been funnier had they not shown it as part of the commercial.

Anybody else have thoughts on this, or did everybody miss the post Rumble showing?

I saw the Pre-Rumble showing. What surprised me was his cockiness and anger all up through college. With his wrestling, he's always seemed like the guy who'll put anyone over, the "good for the business" guy. These two pictures don't seem to meld very well. I wonder when that changed.

Also, when the fans started booing him as a face (early in his career), he was quite mad at them. It makes me wonder about matches like Rock/Hogan and Rock/Lesnar. How much of the anger he shows when the crowd boos him is real, and how much is acting?

most people grow up eventually. i'm sure that when he went from being the big fish in high school/college sports to being the small ugly fish in the WWF, it helped him see that he wasn't really the sh*t like he thought he was.

I agree. I was looking for some more current WWE workers commenting on Rock. What further disappointed me about that fact, was that Angle & Jericho each said a total of 3 lines between them. I would have liked more elaboration than that.....probably more along the lines of Lombardi's several segments.

Driven was a good show; I'd never heard that much before about his college career with Miami. But did they mention that he was part of one national championship team?

Anyhoo, it got me thinkin'...the fans' perception of Rock is going just like it did after his debut. When he came into the WWF at the '96 Survivor Series, the fans initially went along with the blue-chipper, old-school babyface push. But then they started smarking up...and sh*t on Rocky. Hence the heel turn to give the fans what they wanted, and Dwayne's unparalleled mic work, which got him over more as a heel (especially after the corporate screwjob on Foley @ Survivor Series '98)...and then eventually a face, so they had to turn him again.

Now he's a face, and getting another uber-push. This time, though, it's outside the ring. Vince is basically using Rock as the WWE goodwill ambassador. He goes on The View, SNL, makes movies...and all the time, almost never wrestles any more. When was his last drawn-out feud?

So now the fans are getting sick and tired of Rocky stopping by to work a month or two's worth of matches in between "Scorpion King" and "Helldorado" filmings. They're sh*tting on the big-movie-star Rocky. Hence the "Rocky Sucks!" chants at The World for Raw X last week.

Same gimmick, all over again. Vince'll have to make him heel again on his return...and then, who's the face to fight him? Austin? 'Taker? Turn HHH agayne? Naaahhh...
