My plan was to just bombard this section with recaps once I got all caught up, but then I realized a) I am NEVER EVER catching up and b) that'd be mean to force good people down far the list for grins.

I also figured that if you were missing me that much you would have already found your way to my site, but just to make sure...Here are many links - I may edit this later to sneak a few more in

I was planning to find my way to your site, but never got around to it. Thanks for posting all these links, since I really missed reading your CMLL recaps. They're great for helping me decide which tapes to get.

Hey Cubs, why is there a blog, instead of the EZBoard?

It was pretty much down to me and Joe posting, and I wasn't a big fan of the ad-crazy EZBoard interface, so I talked him into moving it over to a nice clean blog. I need to put the feedback address in a more visible place, but if it's just me and Joe talking about CMLL, this is a better setup.

I mean to copy all the stuff over from the old board and stick them someplace, I just haven't got around to it yet.

I caught the Operation Snow Storm episode of Tough Enough again when they were replaying them on Sunday. I think Snow was laughing so much when John and Jamie screwed up the leapfrog because John forgot he was supposed to duck on that run and went to jump, too. Al said said something about knowing "someone would do that", so I figure that everytime leapfrogs get taught, there's always an attempt where the leapee forgets and thinks he's supposed to be the leaper.

I get your point about how John's high spots and love for the acrobatic stuff may hurt him in the eyes of some people who have final say in who wins, but man, he really should win based on what they've shown us. The moonsault, the standing shooting star press, the corner bumps, the arm drag bumps...if he doesn't win, someone's probably going to get some heat for showing clips of him doing so well. At the same time, everything the trainers say indicates that Eric is doing really well in the ring, too, but we haven't gotten to see much of that.

In all, Tough Enough 3 has been a big rebound over the last one. I actually like John, Matt, Eric and Jamie and think all of them would be good winners based on what we've seen, and I could easily see them taking Jonah, though I've considered him as the "villian" (well, at least the Darryl) of the season and he'd be the one I'd cut.

I think the telling thing from last week was that they had people saying "I think he will win" about John, Jonah and Matt - but just "this is what's good about/I could see X as a wrestler" for the other two.

I don't think - based on what we've seen, and acknowledging that last season what we see may be tremondusly different than what the trainers see - Jonah doesn't deserve to win. I think the way Big found out that he wasn't sure if he wanted to do this is gonna lead to problems down the road with people being unable/unwilling to talk to the trainers in order not to impeach themselves (not to mention the horrible double standard compared to Jamie.) But if Jonah's even a little bit unsure, maybe he ought to be spending time wrestling indies and finding out if this lifestyle is really one he wants. I don't know if he's ready now, and there's no point in hurrying him if he's not - no one else is gonna steal him away.

Jonah is the biggest character this season - not as large as Jackie last season and about even with Maven in the first - so that may get him the shot irregardless. I guess it depends on how bad worker he was, and since they never compare (other than saying "he's the best"), it's impossible to tell right now.

The problem with John is that if he wins, the moment he steps in to OVW, Cornette's going to have him working on mat wrestling for six months. It has seemed the theory behind Tough Enough is to show that you can learn, but whatever you've learned is thrown out the window when you get to Developmental, and you start back and step one. And for a guy who's been chomping at the bit to be doing more and more, starting back at nothing is gonna cause some problems.

Hey, Drew, if you catch this - are their many flying guys in OVW? It's always seemed like more in the WWE Benoit model of ground/power/submission stuff.

I think John's seemed the best in-ring talent - or at least acrobatic activity - and should be picked. But for him to, I wonder if maybe going elsewhere wouldn't be so bad, at least for the short term. Obviously, there's nowhere he's gonna go that he'll be in line to make the same amount of money, but it does seem like there's better places to learn how to do wacky spots (while hopefully learning when to do them at the same time) than OVW or WWE right now.

But a job's a job and he'll be okay.

I suspect they've already worked out the Matt/Bill match for next Thursday. Or the week after that. [God bless 'em if they still haven't learned and put them on RAW.] The really lucky break for the two winners is that they might just be able to stick around long enough to get to be on WM, provided they don't screw up in some way.

Hey Cubs,

I'd describe Spanky's mask as more "spoiler without the stars" than "mil mascaras." The faceplant and eyeholds look more like the former than the latter, to me.

I guess I'd have to go back and look at season one again, but Jonah feels like he's gotten a lot more attention than Maven did then and maybe even Jackie in season two. Almost all of the major stories seem to have some kind of Jonah connection. He's been at the center of the season-long ribbing subplot, from the on-going war with Al and Bill to his big moment where he fooled the rest of the cast. There was the whole Jill thing at the beginning and how it related to Jonah, part of Scott's story focused around his early bets and clashes with Jonah and Matt's story seems to keep coming back to his pal, Jonah. He picked up Jason's season one doubts about the business vs. family (did someone go through that in season 2?) And of course, the big plot snakes around Jonah's clashes with Bill and "not getting it."

To be perfectly honest, I think I mostly want him to get cut because he keeps saying "kid" and calling everyone kids, including the previous winners and Nowinski. I don't know why, but that drove me nuts.

Approaching it from the perspective that they've put the show together with a pretty good feeling as to who they think is going to win, his major presence looks good in his favor. Then again, if he loses, the interaction he had with Bill makes a nice cautionary tale about not understanding the way the veterans feel about the business. It also looks like the last few episodes have taken a direction of Matt emerging from Jonah's shadow, with Matt inheriting his spot in the rib saga by ending up as the one who took the wheels off Al's truck, while Jonah has been the guy with the Playstation 2. There's a definite shift somewhere around the episode where Kelly has all that trouble during the heavy bag carry that Matt starts to get more attention than he previously had.

I guess we haven't actually seen much of any of them doing any specific mat wrestling beyond the headlock takedowns, except for Scott making goofy faces while applying the Boston Crab. The way they keep saying that Eric is good in the ring and dependable without getting to see much footage of it could mean that he (or any of the others, really) is excelling in the basics and things that simply might not make for the best clips for an MTV show compared to the moonsaults and corner bumps, even though I think Kenny seemed like he was doing really well with all of that whenever they showed him in the ring last year.

Odessa: Haven't seen the Spoiler, but I'll take your word for it. My knowledge of non-"present day CMLL" masks is amazingly small. Also, you may want to change the hyperlink in your profile so it actually works.

I'll give you Jonah's screen time over Maven (Maven just came on so strong at the end and you were pretty much sure he HAD to win, it was a good finish) but no way over Jackie. Actually, let me go count.

Out of the 10 training episodes (throwing out the casting and winning show), you could say 4 at least featured Jackie as the major charcter: the three episode arc featuring the Hot Tub [1] and the ACL episode.

Out of the 11 episodes this season, you can chalk up Jonah as the leading star for 4 as well - Jonah/Jill, Jonah's Rib, and the 2 arc Operation Snow Storm/Jonah SelfDoubt (talking to Al, Big, almost getting cut.) Slight edge to Jackie.

I think Jonah has more of a consisent influnce, because unlike what normally seems to happen, they IDed an intersting person early, and it's not because they were going to be gone very quick. Because Jonah had a storyline with someone who did leave early, and because he was a goof throughout, he's been doing stuff most every week. I think Jackie had the higher peak exposure (har har), because those Hot Tub episodes probably featured 3 other people and wrestling and stuff, but it was hard to tell.

It's all splitting hairs and perhaps I'm just subconciously downplaying Jonah's exposure in hopes that it won't get him picked.

Mat wrestling doesn't make good MTV, I guess. One of the neater things they've done with the show is having the first season kids wrestle from TRAX on a webcast before the finale. Probably cost a bit, but if they really wanted us to seriously take this vote, it'd be nice to actually get to see a comlete match from all five before hand.

1 - in future years, the idenity of the other person in the hot tub will become switched and managled, kinda like how Meltzer keeps talking about Nidia being in the hot tub with Josh when it was Chris Ni.

Cubs,

This is the Spoiler's webpage.

http://www.originalspoiler.homestead.com

Although, the more I think about it, Spanky's mask may remind me more of the Super Destroyers (Scott Hog and Will Bill Irwin).

Thanks for the heads up on the link.
