Red Sox righthander and 21 game winner Derek Lowe is recovering from a recent procedure to remove a cancerous growth from his nose that required 60 stitches. Although called significant, he should be available by spring training (source: Boston Herald, would link it, but I'm getting this out of the physical paper itself). So now, the #1 starter for the Red Sox has had arm problems recently. The #2 starter is a knuckleball pitcher who pitches great from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but who knows what to expect the other parts of the season. And the #3 starter just had surgery to remove a cancerous growth. Now, someone remind me again why the Red Sox weren't willing to get Bartolo Colon or Kevin (I got traded for a bag of baseballs) Milwood? Oh well, at least the GM is hard at work playing grunge guitar.

Edit: There is a story up on www.redsox.com under Derek Lowe recovering from skin cancer with more details. Where the hell is my ulcer medication.

Here's another link that I am posting only to provide some reviews of Epstein's guitar playing.

I thought Lowe was the #2 guy, and Wakefield was long relief/spot-starter/spot closer?

As of now Wakefield is in the rotation, and the manager has stated that it will go Martinez/Wakefield/Lowe as the order. That leaves Casey (who needs Bartolo Colon) Fossum as #4 and John (I'm not going to the All-Star Game because I'm special) Burkett as the #5.

The order of the rotaions does not mean much these days. Plus you want Wakefield to be able to eat up innings after a Pedro start because he cant go more than 7 innings now-a-days.

I don't think Colon was worth given up two young major league talent for. And I think Fossum is going to have a hell of a year. Around 15 wins.

Plus the more I read about Bill James the more I think his crazy ideas might work. I think the sox are a good bet for the wild card as long as Perdo is health and Lowe is within 3 wins of last year.

I don't see why everyone is so eager to give up Hillebran. Other than K/BB he's perfectly fine. Infact he's better than about two-thirds of the thrid basemen on any roster. I'll agree that Colon would have been a nice pickup, but that's a high price to pay for a team that has zero farm system as of right now.

Frankly, if I were Bostson I'd completely rebuild.

Well, yeah, he can hit, but look who's in the front office. Hillenbrand is not much of a sabermetric player, and he may be as good as he's going to get... or at least won't be that significantly better. But yeah, I'd restock the farm system. Draft picks for players like Floyd (who, although underappreciated, isn't going to help the Sox out in the long run that much) and eating bad contracts (hello, Offerman/Everett, the real cancers in the Red Sox clubhouse!) will help push them over the top. Not to mention the outright theft of guys like Jeremy Giambi and Fox.
