This is uncharacteristic of me, flaunting ratings for the shows, since you guys do that anyway, but I'm calling this to your attention, mainly because I just saw the show on tape last night and well...

Let's say you get out what you put out. The finger pointing commences now.

I don't know what kind of rating they were expecting, but that seems like a pretty good rating to me, considering what this was, a lame award show.

Actually, it had a much higher rating than I imagined it would. I expected around a 2; maybe a 2.3, but a 2.9 shocked me. However, this might be the worst 2.9 rating they could get, because if fan reaction overall is 1/2 as bad as the reaction on the net, then it could actually cost viewers in the long term by the casual viewers believing the bait and switch was pulled one more time. Remember, if the fans are not on the net (and according to most WWF/E defenders very few wrestling fans actually are on the net); and they are trained under the general principle that 'The WWF/E does not acknowledge the existance of people unless they are going to show up', then these fans might have been expecting at least 1 of the Foley/Hart/Austin pairing to be on the show. By not at least throwing scraps to these fans, they might derail the usual Rumble-Mania ratings growth. But then again, that would be assuming the 'genius' Vince McMahon made an error, and as we know from the past 2 years everything that Vince does is brilliant.

I'm surprised it was that high. What did "watching paint dry" score in the ratings this week? A 3.2?

I think some it had to do with: Ok, the good stuff will start soon, the good stuff will start soon. Or, they are holding the big surprise for the end, yeah, that's what they are doing they'll have the big surprise come out at the end. And 'Watching Paint Dry' had a 3.4 rating with a 5 share this week, beating the programming on UPN and WB.

Well...I know I kept watching it thinking it would get better, then I kept watching it because it had that "train wreck" feel. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it because it was turning out so bad and I couldn't believe it. I would like to see a quarter hour breakdown to see if the rating declined as the show went on.
But I do agree, there is some serious finger pointing going on about that show. Something coming off that bad cannot have atleast one scapegoat.

No shit. That's the only thing that kept us going. We started out the night in full mark-out mode, then about an hour into it, everyone started looking at each other and making disillusioned comments like, "You know, this kinda sucks."

Finally, when we got to Edge's little speech, we were making enraged comments like, "You know, this really sucks!" and "Michael Cole dyed his beard!"

The rating had more to do with people thinking Austin might be returning, than anything else.

All the clips for RAW X were like weekly vignettes for Austin, leading up to his return.

Yeah---2.9 sounds about like what Austin would be drawing if he were still around.

Hey, you add that 2.9 to what they're getting now, and the WWF would be happy again.

ps. I know that's not what you meant, but my way of looking at it is more plausible. Austin will easily add a bunch of fans to the show. It's just whether or not the people in charge want the "What" shit to ever die or not.

Austin wasn't popping ratings when he left. He was stale. Not one single star they've brought in is popping ratings now. I don't think any evidence supports the theory that Austin will immediately make everything 1998 again. While a quick ratings increase could indeed occur, I doubt it will last since Austin hasn't got anything to show us we haven't seen before.

As top heel (check)
Comedy (check)
Singles Champion (check)
Tag-Team Champion (check)
KOTR winner (check)
Royal Rumble winner (triple check)
Elder statesman putting over young guys (Che---Oh, wait)

He was being a Triple H when he was still here, so I don't see what his returning does for the product. If he's coming back to put over Edge and Booker T and Brock Lesnar and RVD then bring him back. But his place is not on top anymore. It never draws as well the second time (or third) as it did that first one. Ask Hogan. Ask Rocky. Ask anyone who went back to the well and came up with an empty bucket.
No one in any post I've read has provided a substantial argument to explain why Austin will be different if he returns.

So this is me saying that what you said is not more plausible than what I said, Tribal. He might "add a bunch of fans to the show", but he very well might not. And even if he did, where's the evidence that he will keep them? But it's not as if they're waiting for him to return and avoiding RAW when he does. If they don't like RAW anymore they don't flip to it every week. I won't be RAW: 3.4 one week and then RAW: 32.6 the next. Another thing that worries me about bringing him back is the fact his first evacuation---or rather, let's call it what it was, a hissy fit, resulted in the complete restructuring of the show since he blew major storylines. Then he leaves again and shits on the fans. If he comes back this time, and leaves for a third time, how big of an insult will that be to the fans? And what ratings damage might this constant coming and going, poorly explained, do to the already weakened fan base?

Of course, no one ever mentions any of these things. They just blindly pretend that Austin will show up and all of a sudden Triple H will don the Avatar mask. It's not like Austin shows up and then boom, Triple H won't be fucking Stephanie anymore. It's not like the writing will change automatically and become stirring, emmy-worthy stuff. It'll just be one more big name in a pool of creative shit right now, and a proven SELFISH big name on top of that. And like I said, no one mentions these things. They just say Austin left because "he cares too much". Yeah, lots of evidence there. It's the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever seen. I'd rather watch a Steiner/Triple H best of seven series than see Austin return.

This is normally where someone like The Cubs Fan will seek me out, send me an instant message and remind me that it's the diversity of opinion (such as above) that makes W THE GREATEST WRESTLING MESSAGE BOARD ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH.

...although first, I usually have to be severly deluded to read his IMs that way.

I'll say this: I haven't really given a rat's ass about the WWE since Austin left, nor have most of my wrestling watching friends. Here's the thing: we don't care why he left and we don't want him to be different when he returns. We just want Austin to return. We want to see the same ol' Texas Rattlesnake drinkin' beers, flippin' birds and hittin' stunners. We want to see him make a list and run through every damn one of those sons a bitches until he's got both the WWE and World Title around his waist. We want to see him hit Eric Bischoff and Vince McMahon with stunners, one after the other and then both at once. Drive a monster truck to the arena, then hijack a beer truck and drive it to the ring. And I have a feeling that a lot of other fans, the ones still chanting "What?" and the ones who were pissed off when Vince came out to take Steve's awards feel the same way.

Is that good for business in the long run? Probably not. But as things stand, nothing currently happening seems to be good for the long run and I honestly don't see any of this changing any time soon because they're trying to put band-aids on amputations and the inmates are running the asylum and no one has the guts to stand up to StepHHH and I don't care JUST COME BACK STEVE!
