Here is a list of the best Free Agent signings in terms of value, in my opinion.

Todd Zeile: $1.5 mil. a better third baseman than Ventura and a better hitter than Nick Johnson. Gives the Yankees a top bench player.

Paul Byrd: $5 mil per year (2) won 17 last year for crappy KC. Can win 20-25 easy for Atlanta.

Fred McGriff: A steal for the Dodgers. He can still put up numbers in the big 3 categories.

Durham and Alfonzo: $6.7 & $6.5 The Giants lost Kent, but got a hell of an infield.

Only Big Name still available: Ivan Rodriguez, catcher.

I think outfielders Reggie Sanders and Ruben Sierra can still hit. Somebody give them a chance.

Instead of making excuses, shouldn't Epstein be making deals and signing players. They really missed out on Alfonzo. The Bosox haven't done jack this offseason and the clock is ticking.

Epstein is just the puppet figure head GM placed in charge by the cabal of Luchiano/Henry/Werner. And, the Sox are not going to pick up a big free agent. They'll make noise about how they came this close to picking up this guy, and they had this guy ready to sign, but they will get no one. Anyone who has followed the track record of Henry and Werner know that these two have destroyed franchises in Florida (late 90's-early 00's) and San Diego (early 90's) during their reigns of terror. The only reason this never gets mentioned is because the Boston media hated Harrington and Duquette so much that since the cabal actually sucks up to the media, they can destroy the Red Sox without getting questioned for their moves.

I don't think Zeile has ever been a better than average third baseman, and Ventura has Gold Gloves. I love having Zeile on the bench, and playing "utility guy" for us, but no way is he better, at this point in his career, than Nick will surely be this year.

And WTF with Lucchino's comment about the Yanks being "the evil empire?" Sounds like sour grapes from someone who probably never had a shot to get the Cuban anyway...

Coming from a Yankee fan, I'd love to see Nick Johnson have a good year, but last year he stunk. He had plenty of at-bats, but .243/15/58 just isn't getting it done. Zeile gives much more production than that which is why Nick is dangling as trade-bait.

I also like Ventura, but he hit the wall after the All-Star break last year. .203 Average with 4 HRs. Unless he finds his stroke, Zeile can replace him quickly.

20-25 easy? Check back in October when he goes 12-17 for the Braves. Paul Byrd is one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball. Go ahead, check it out. Okay, he doesn't walk many, but I think you will find his year last year was much better than anything he's ever done and he won't keep his performance level even that high.

I'm grudingly a believer in Mazzone's ability as a pitching coach, so I don't think Byrd'll tank in Atlanta. That being said, I also don't see him winning more than 20 games there. 15, tops, and he'll be close to a .500 winning percentage.

Those numbers will be fine, though, assuming Maddux and Ortiz deliver as we know they can and Mazzone can turn Hampton around. I STILL don't understand dealing Millwood to what was already shaping up to be their toughest divisional rival, but I think the rotation will be fine overall. Not as dominant as the Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz years, but still the best rotation in the NL.

Maddux will be fine - or he should be, at least. His pitching style really shouldn't deteriorate with age (as much as others - location-based), although I do wonder if he won't see some starts off. Ortiz I'm not entirely sold on, however; I don't think the prospective win-loss gain (assuming Millwood takes Ortiz's spot) is going to be positive for Atlanta. (In other words, I see Millwood winning more games than Ortiz.)

To be honest, I don't see Byrd having 30 decisions over the course of the year. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up with 15 wins, that's an absolute top. I see 10-12 being more likely - and I think Demian Moss could've given them that at a fraction of the price.

Going back to Zeile, I have to agree with jkfc - at this point, there's no way Zeile is hands down way better than Ventura at third. He's a good bench player and fill-in, yes, and he could start on most teams (if they're willing to forgive his defense), but not the Yankees. I think skorpio hit on it - Zeile seems to be an insurance policy. If Ventura tanks, then they have Zeile.

I will hate to see Ramiro in enemy colors, but that is a good signing for them. They say he is healthy, and he is a solid, versatile guy. I will have trouble rooting against him. Now, if only Boston had signed Clemens...(sigh)

With so many quality starters on the payroll, I really don't understand why they signed a 40 year old man for one year and 10 million. It's a great PR move, I suppose, but Jeff Weaver could likely win more games and work out a lot better for them in the long run. When it's all said and done, who do you think the Yankees starting rotation will include? And who will take El Duque?

As much as I dislike Clemens, he, at 40, is still better than most guys at 30. I think Jeff Weaver is a decent pitcher, but c'mon now, the guy ain't the second coming of Ron Guidry. I think the rotation will be:

Mussina
Pettitte
Clemens
Contreras
Wells

I think right now, the plan is to not rush out and trade Duque, Hitchcock, and Weaver, but instead to go into camp with those guys in the pen, ready to jump in and fill a hole at any time (at least I read that a few places). Duque is not making that much money ($4 mil?), so I am sure a playoff caliber team would jump on him (A's, Giants, Astros).

Best signings in my opinion:
-Mike Stanton by the Mets. Gives them a quality left-hander in the bullpen.
- Jeff Kebt -Houston. Makes that line-up very potent if he hits between Bagwell and Berkman and allows them to try and deal Ward for some pitching help.
