| #1 Posted on 17.12.02 1031.27 Reposted on: 17.12.09 1031.47 | So far all the feedback I've seen on the D'Lo "racism" angle has been negative. Let me be the first to say, I am intrigued.
As with most WWE angles, I'm sure it will be screwed up and forgotten about in no time. However, the potential intrests me. I always liked the Nation of Domination because depending on your perspective, you could take them alot of different ways.
I think the key here would be to play the entire thing completely seriously. Don't turn it into any kind of comedy angle or have the other wrestlers making fun of D'Lo. Minorities who feel like they are being held down, or discriminated against, strictly because of their color, do in fact make up a somewhat sizeable segment of the population. We have characters portraying every other group so why not one like this?
I think the other key would be that he can't "really" be screwed because he's black. All of his losses should be completely fair or completely "honest" mistakes by the refs. I just hope no other wrestlers or refs are actually portrayed as being racist.
I dunno, I just have always loved discussing racial issues with people of all colors and ethnicities. Don't know why. Promote this thread! | | redsoxnation

Last time Vince played with the racism angle, it was the Hart Foundation/Nation semi-feud, with DX framing the Hart Foundation for writing racist slogans in the Nation locker room. Before that, it was the classic Terry Funk/JYD with Mel Phillips getting branded angle. Gerwitz has shown very little in being able to write good angles, and the last time Vince tried a semi-serious angle on RAW we ended up with necrophilia. | InVerse

Or, do they have Nowinski, since he's already a Harvard grad and a womanizer (Molly angle), go into full blown Ted Kennedy mode and talk about all the work he did at Harvard for minorities. I agree. I didn't know The Truth was coming back, but I'd love to see him and D'lo arguing about how THEY held him down! This whole angle reeks of Ron Killings. | fuelinjected

Yep, Ron Killings was the first guy I thought about when D-Lo went the "racist" direction. I didn't even think about Shelton Benjamin until someone mentioned him in this thread but, that could be interesting. Shelton's tag team partner in OVW, Redd Dawg, was wrestling on the WWE shows here in South Carolina about a month ago. Maybe he'll be part of it also. What about Norman Smiley and Elix Skipper, where are they at now?
I don't have a lot of confidence in the WWE to do this angle properly but, it does have some potential if it's done right. Is there any way possible to work the Rock into this thing when he comes back or would this be the type of angle Rock would want to stay far away from because of his acting career. I can see the Rock cutting a heel promo INSINUATING, but never outright saying it, racist reasons for him getting booed against Hogan and Lesnar. After all, it was the original Nation of Domination that cultivated the current Rock character.
The WWE is walking a fine line if they go the "racist" direction. They better do it right or they will be looking at a PR nightmare. | Davros

And before anyone asks the question of what race any of us Wieners are, that is irrelevant. I can barely stomach the Latino Heat shit-- and the only reason I can is that Eddie is so OTT,-- well, I think its bullshit.
If WWE does this angle, and offends me and so many other fans out there, I will not only boycott the product, I'll start a campaign to get one of those writing bastards fired, whether it's through a lawsuit, petition or what not. And if any folks out there think I'm over reacting, or being a >dumbass<, then they are probably the same masoginistic idiots that thinks it's cool to see a woman get hit-- worked or not. Yes, it's on the same plane.
So here's to hoping that none of our beloved Wieners are little Trents in disguise.

Remember, Vince loves petitions/boycotts against his product. He lives for it. Anything that would call attention to it he loves. Now, if you just stopped watching the product and ignored him completely, that would hurt Vince worse than any protest would. | rockdotcom_2.0

Dont forget in late 2000 with the "who ran over Austin" fued. Rikishi played the race card then with his great white hope speech. I can always remember how the crowd was actually behind Rikishi for his thinking, while JR was trying so hard to push Rikishi as a heel.
But really I think that you shouldnt use race as a reason to cheer or boo somebody, its too dangerous. It can get really ugly. But thats just my opinion. | The Amazing Salami

Oh yes! Shelton is most definitely a black guy.

He was an amateur wrestler (2 time All American) at the University of Minnesota, just like Brock Lesnar. Shelton and Lesnar were a tag team in OVW with the name "Minnesota Stretching Crew". |
