Unfortunately, I'm not talking about the last couple of weeks (although the last couple of weeks haven't been awful). For the past month, whenever I have the time, I've been going through my video tapes of wrestling, football games, etc. and either labeling it, transferring it, or just deciding to record over it. A few days ago, I found a tape of wrestling shows from a little over 1 1/2 years ago and it reminded me just how great the WWF TV shows were not too long ago.

These 2 weeks of shows featured the following main events:

1st Raw - The tag match where Jericho/Benoit won the tag team titles from Austin/HHH. Great match with all the guys going all out, particularly HHH finishing the match (including taking the Walls of Jericho on the announce desk and the ending spot of accidently hitting Austin with a sledgehammer) with a torn quad.

1st SmackDown - TLC match for the tag titles with Jericho/Benoit vs. Edge & Christian vs. Dudleys vs. Hardys. Sure it was a spotfest but, it was DAMN GOOD!!!

2nd Raw - Benoit vs. Austin for the WWF title. They made the match seem extra special by doing the ring introductions old school style while both guys were in the ring. They then had the staredown while the ref went through the instructions and checked them for foreign objects. Whatever happened to that kind of stuff? Excellent match but, Vince ended it with another throwback to the "Montreal Screwjob" (with the Hart family, including Stu, in the crowd) when he called for the bell immediately after Austin put Benoit in the Crippler Crossface. The show ended with Jericho placing Austin in the Walls of Jericho while Benoit had Vince in the Crippler Crossface.

To set up the title match, Vince forced Benoit and Jericho to compete in qualifying matches earlier in the show. Benoit beat Rhino when he slapped on the Crossface during the Gore and Jericho won the Hardcore title by pinning the Big Show (Rhino hit Jericho with the Gore and won the Hardcore title before Jericho could get to the back with his new title).

2nd SmackDown - Another Benoit vs. Austin match for the WWF title and it was even better than the one on Raw. This is the match that featured Benoit hitting 10 consecutive rolling Germans on Austin while Austin tried to call time out.

There was also a Jericho vs. Angle match with interference from the new owner of WCW, Shane McMahon.

Other things happening on these shows:

- It was the beginning of the Kurt Angle vs. Shane McMahon angle that led to their street fight at King of the Ring.

- Lance Storm became the first member of WCW to invade when he jumped in the ring and superkicked Perry Saturn during a match before taking off through the crowd and to a waiting Shane McMahon with a limo.

- The Dudleys were feuding with the Hollys and were turning heel after sending both Molly Holly and Spike through a table. Of course, this was also the time Molly and Spike were hanging out with each other backstage which led to some fun interraction and confrontations between Spike/Molly and Kurt Angle.

- Eddy Guerrero was trying to prove his loyalty to the Hardys by coming out to the ring dressed like a Hardy and helping them during matches.

- It was the beginning of the angle with a stalker watching the Undertaker's wife.

Two issues that might have led to something interesting but, were cut short by outside forces. The building tension in the Austin-HHH relationship which could have really exploded following their loss of the tag titles and the Eddy Guerrero trying to be a Hardy angle. Those 2 angles MIGHT have led to some interesting stuff if they could have played out properly.

I really think that month leading up to KOTR 2001 may have been the best month of WWF tv they ever put on. Everything was just rolling at light speed at that point, the matches were incredible, the crowds were rabid. *single tear of remembrance*

Notice the one constant in these two weeks and that whole month leading up to KOTR: Benoit and/or Jericho in the main event.

If only the WWF would listen...

And then Buff the Bagboy showed up in a main event, and everything went down the drain.

I have all those events on tape too, and it's a good thing to fall back on when you don't feel like "E" if you know what I mean...

I was lucky enough to be at this RAW...May 28, 2001 in Calgary.

Man, the crowd was SUPER hot all night long. Storm's run-in had everyone going crazy; Benoit and Jericho were SO over it wasn't funny.

You're right, this was an amazing stretch of TV.

Whenever someone says, “Chris Benoit isn't over and will never be over”, I throw that in their face and tell 'em to chew on that.

As a matter of fact, that's just what I'll do right now.
