Costco is a Sam's Club-style members-only mega warehouse chain based in Issaquah, WA. They have 385 warehouses, including 284 in the United States and the rest in Canada, UK, Japan and Mexico. They've been a staple in the Pacific Northwest for years. The Price Club merger happened in 1993 (the change to the "Costco" name for Price Club stores came later, I think.)

They've just started opening in the Midwest (Minneapolis and Kansas City just got theirs last October). They also have a website that sells a line of merchandise not exactly identical to the stores, but good with values anyway.

I think they're about ten times better than Sam's.

Update:

It's REALLY STRONG! I mean, it's a whole 'nother kind of jerky - at least this stuff will last a lot longer then the beef stuff does. A little goes a LONG way.

Still, I kinda like it, though.

But my Ohio License Plate says, "Birth Place of Aviation", and the new new ones are celebrating the Bicentenial for 2003.

Seconding the adorable factor of the lil' squid.

My only firsthand experience with Japanese packaging came from visiting this marketplace-styled building in the Chicagoland area. I sware, a trip to Japan would be the cheapest vacation in the world for me. I'd just be in a grocery store reading packages for a week.

Example: sitting on my shelf is a pink beverage can (made of *steel*) with 2 tiny strawberries on it. It's "Ichigo au lait": "Fresh mellow milk and tiny sweet strawberries fell in love at first sight, then thy became a delicious Strawberry Milk."

American packaging just can't compare.

I am following my fish.

Japanese packaging was pretty normal where I grew up. I lived in a town that got Japanese freighters coming for lumber. A group of friends of mine would "snag" salmon as they moved upstream to spawn ("snagging" was somebody on the bridge calling out to the kids with lines in the water off the docks below to yank when the fish came by, thus you'd snag the fish instead of them biting). They would trade the fish with the freighter crew for Japanese Coca Cola and cigarettes. The Coke was in long skinny cans. The cigarettes were long and skinny. Japan is apparently all about long and skinny.

Never saw any squid snacks though.

There's also one in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, just north of Woodfield Mall.

Now I'll go in the corner and shudder at the sight of the name of that piece of crap town I used to live in called Lake Zurich.

There's a Chinese store down the road whre you can stock up on all the cool things require for thai cooking. They also have these frozen whole squid that I'm pretty sure have just been caught and ignobily shoved into a bag and whacked straight in the ice. They look sorta forlorn. If I'm brave/insane/bored enough I may buy it and cook or. Or scan it.

I stop regularly at an asian supermarket that has a TON of this weird fish stuff, plus Pocky and other sweet snacks. They have all sorts of cool Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Philipino foods. My favorite snack name is KASUGAI PEANUT AND YOU.

I worked at a fish market the summer after 11th grade. When we got squid (usually referred to as `kalmari') or crabs in, the percentage of Asian customers would usually quadruple until it was all gone. Squid sucked because they're even more slippery than most things you find in a fish store (and that particular shade of `bruise purple' is a bit of a turnoff) and crabs sucked because they don't band the claws like with lobster...and from experience I will tell you that getting pinched by a crab hurts way more (although you're more likely to instantly freak out and smash a lobster against the wall real quick if he gets you with the big `crusher' claw).

On the other hand, there's lots of restaraunts around here who do deep-fried kalmari: it's like clam strips only less chewy and with a little more flavor (and the cooking removes the color). I'm not a big seafood fan, but it's a great appetizer.

On the `more like jerky' tip, Canadian Maritimers eat ``Dulse''. It's dried purple seaweed. Salty as hell, but people love it...(goes right through you, too)...

If you scanned some of the packages, that might atone for the infamous "Kamala II/Marcel Hillie" incidents....
And is it actually called KASUGI PEANUT AND BIX, or am I just way too smartassed for my own good?
