This is what happens when I go to Costco: I walk out with squid.

I originally went there to pick up the Quincy Jones box set...and ALMOST came out empty-handed; it looks like they've turned over the stock from what they had for Christmas and beyond (all the "Simpsons" first season DVD sets have been replaced with "Buffy" first season DVDs - good thing I bought it when I did) but I finally found a few left in a big box of things I was completely disinterested in.

Costco's really just kinda taken way off since I first went there with my family. We used to have no problem skipping from sample to sample, but now it always seems like the trays are empty and surrounded by hovering people WAITING for that microwave to ding! So I had a tangelo wedge and NOTHIN'. BIG DEAL.

Somehow, walking around I ended up at this section of Asian food - I don't know if this is something local to the Sunnyvale Costco, or this particular part of the state, or what, but man it was WEIRD. And then I saw THIS! How could I NOT buy it? I ask you: LOOK!

IT'S A BIG BAG OF SQUID PIECES *JUST* BIG ENOUGH TO FIT ON THE SCANNER BED!!

I haven't tried it yet. Probably tomorrow during the football. With Cheez-Its.

Really, it's like upscale pork rinds - one of those protein-only snax that all the locarb folks could really get into, I'm sure. Probably more salt than beef jerky, though - looking at the label this may be fat and mostly carb free but WOOO the cholesterol and sodium! This probably means it'll taste TOTALLY AWESOME. ("Ingredients: Squid, salt, sugar, monosodium glutamate")

I also appreciate the broken English (AND Spanish!) on the back label.

Enjoy "SOO" prepared squid
It's tasty to serve at parties and on picnics.
Also is a convenient snack to take at any time and any place.
You can share with all your friends the "SOO"delicious and good taste prepared squid as a gift.

Disfrutar "SOO" Calamar preparado.

That's some interesting spelling!

Anyway, it's all about the happy lookin' squid logo. (I guess he is blissfully unaware of his fate to be shredded and put in 8 ounce bags for the Sogo Trading Company of South San Francisco.)

I'll be back later to tell you how it tasted!

I wonder if you could buy that squid at this fine shop in Japan:

And before you ask, YES it is a REAL establishment.

And when you're eating them, would you do that here:

I don't think they have the Mr. Sparkle box there, but they've got a lot of stuff that comes close.

Squid Strips, I remember those. My mom would always have a small packet in her handbag everytime I had an urge to snack. Mom always got the spicy kind, and that was the overriding factor: spicy with squid flavoring. But it wasn't that bad.

Now in my year that I was stationed in Korea you saw dehydrated squid everywhere on the economy, it is just like beef jerky here. Plus it is the snack of choice in the movie theaters over there. Also never buy or eat kimchee, it will leave a flavor in your mouth and stick up your breath for weeks and no amount of Listerine will save you.

"Rocker Room" is a valid translation...the L and R are interchangable to the japanese...

Jushin Ryger is a valid spelling, infact if you look in a japanese dictonary, there is no reference to the letter L as R is the perferred usage [but obvoisly the Lyger is the animal in question...]

for all the street fighter fans, Ryu is pronounced the same if it was written as Lyu -- "Lee-u"

just my 2.42 yen...

Not true. Kansas City, Mo., has a Costco. I believe there's one in St. Louis, too. Don't hold me to the latter, though.

Wait! What is this Costco of which you all are referring??

In Ottawa, the Costco used to be called Price Club before being bought out. It's great for doing shopping if you have a family, OR if you're looking for a large quantity of something because alot of their stuff comes in big ass packages. Buy in bulk - save some cash.
