Good to see the Olde Towne Team(e) made its first move of the offseason today by acquiring Ryan Rupe. Because when I look at the Sox roster, I see a lack of pitchers with plus-5 ERAs. And, hell, this guy was waived by the DEVIL RAYS. Waived. By the worst team in baseball. He'll definitely propel us to the pennant.

Teams sign guys like that all the time, and they almost never make it onto the big-league roster. Betcha he gets released or assigned to the minors by the end of spring training.

They got him for nothing and he can fill out Pawtucket's roster. If he gets something going, Epstein looks like a genius. If he stays in Pawtucket all year - who cares? He's only 27 and might turn it around. Probably not, but it's a low risk acquisition.

Since the Sox have only like 28 players on the 40 MAN ROSTER this move cost them nothing. And who know this kid maybe the next Tim Wakefield

The Red Sox are going to have a lot of problems until they can replenish their farm system. Until then there are going to be a lot of retread pitchers and aging hitters who are more than likely looking for one last shot.
