The BBC have asked people to vote in for their top Briton's. It was decided last night. Here is the list with a few notes.

1 Winston Churchill (Fair enough)
2 Isambard Kingdom Brunel (Vote rigging suspected by Brunel University)

11 Ernest Shackleton
12 Captain James Cook
13 Lord Baden-Powell

17 Michael Crawford (Vote rigging by his fan club)
18 Queen Victoria
19 Sir Paul McCartney
20 Sir Alexander Fleming
21 Alan Turing OBE
22 Michael Faraday
23 Owain Glyndwr
24 Queen Elizabeth II (Jubilee year pushed her up the list)
25 Professor Stephen Hawking (Clever guy, but in all honesty, probably high due to his condition than his work)
26 William Tyndale
27 Emmeline Pankhurst
28 William Wilberforce
29 David Bowie (Well, Diamond Dogs was good...)
30 Guy Fawkes (Catholic terrorist number 30?)

39 John Harrison
40 King Henry VIII (Destroyed historical buildings, started own religion to allow himself to get divorced)
41 Charles Dickens
42 Sir Frank Whittle
43 John Peel (Radio DJ for 40 years. Also rigged, I think)
44 John Logie Baird
45 Aneurin Bevan (NHS founder)
46 Boy George (?! Seriously, why?)
47 Sir Douglas Bader
48 William Wallace (People voted for Mel Gibson)

50 John Wesley
51 King Arthur (If he existed...)
52 Florence Nightingale

56 Sir Cliff Richard (Either the world's greastest virgin or closet case)
57 Sir Alexander Graham Bell
58 Freddie Mercury
59 Dame Julie Andrews
60 Edward Elgar

94 King Edward I
95 Sir Barnes Neville Wallis
96 Richard Burton
97 Tony Benn

Overall, a load of populist bollocks. I seriously believe that people have no idea about the history of their own country anymore.

Would the US one be like this, with figures like Washington and Lincoln fighting for places against Michael Jordan and Eminem?

Depends on how the balloting went. I'm sure someone's done something like this.

Anyway, I thought a "Briton" was someone specifically from England. Is it all the British Isles? Because I caught a couple Scots and at least one Irishman on there.

My question is where the hell is William the Conquerer. Yeah, he was from Normandy but jesus chirst if it weren't for him they wouldn't BE a Britain as we know it.

No Beatle should be in the top 50. Sorry, they were musicians. John Lennon at # 7 is especially egregious.

'Briton', in this case meant from the British Isles, including the Republic of Ireland (so, technically, William was French).

The Beatles were the most influential musicians in the last 100 years - John Lennon was a visionary genius. He most certainly belongs that high. I kinda feel bad for Ringo, though.

Princess Di being ahead of Shakespeare, Darwin, Issac Newton (and The Beatles), well, that's just upsetting...

And there wasn't room for Monty Python? I mean, we got Robbie Williams and a Sex Pistol on there - we can't squeeze in John Cleese? Python was more important than "Rock DJ" certainly.

And where the fuck is William Regal?!

(The American one wouldn't have *nearly* that many political figures. Washington, Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Lincoln, Roosevelt - maybe Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy. Reagan's got an unexplainable cult of popularity in this country. That's probably about it. We'd have to make room for Julia Roberts, certainly.)

OK, so Ireland counts? In that case, where the hell is James Joyce (and probably a million other authors I'm forgetting) and Charles Stewart Parnell? And Roy Keane. I mean, you put Beckham on the list.

Also, no Gladstone OR Disraeli?

That's a weird-ass list.

If this was an internet ballot without cheating (yeah right) I'd guess the #1 American voted would be Abe Lincoln. But that's just my guess.

Would the US one be like this, with figures like Washington and Lincoln fighting for places against Michael Jordan and Eminem?

This is hilarious. I can just see it now.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the 100 greatest Americans ever.

#2 - Martin Luther King Jr.
#3 - Albert Einstein
#4 - Eminem
#5 - George Washington
#6 - Michael Jordan
#7 - Thomas Jefferson
#8 - John F. Kennedy

Ok I read the list twice and all I can say is where is Benny Hill?! His was the first name I thought of when I saw the title of the thread. I watched him a lot as a kid and loved every minute of it.

I paid no attention when the list was brought out, mainly due to the absence of Alfred Hitchcock, but Churchill winning is pretty much the best outcome. After all, our country wouldn't still be here without him.

No, depending on the day of the week and how much the media manipulated it, the list of Americans would wind up like this

# 1 John F Kennedy
# 2 Jesse Jackson
# 3 Alec Baldwin
# 4 Al Sharpton
# 5 Barbara Streisand
# 6 LBJ
# 7 Barry Bonds
# 8 Eugene Debs
# 9 Michael Jackson
# 10 Rally Monkey

Nelson is at #9.

Benny Hill's comedy is seen as an embarassing non-PC throwback to the 70's over here, so he never gets credit for his work.

Thousands of years of British history and a freaking POP SONGWRITER/SINGER is in the top 10?

I like the Beatles, etc., but top ten for Lennon is a sad sick joke.

Princess Di gets the John Kennedy "beautiful dead" vote despite not doing anything of note.

It's nice to see I wasn't the only one looking for former Doctors in the list. Given what a varied group this list turned out to be, I would have expected Baker to be on the list.
