NBC Bringing Back 'Let's Make a Deal'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - And behind this door we have ... a chance to appear on a new version of the venerable game show "Let's Make a Deal."

NBC is looking for "audience participants" for a new prime-time version of the game, in which outlandishly dressed contestants trade modest prizes for a shot at something far more valuable hidden in a box or behind a door. The catch is that the hidden prize could turn out to be worthless junk.

The network has committed to five hourlong episodes of the game, although no air date has been set. Original "Let's Make a Deal" host Monty Hall is an executive producer (along with his daughter Sharon, Jay Renfroe and David Garfinkle) of the new show, but will not go in front of the camera. A host hasn't been chosen yet.

NBC will hold "audience participation viewings" to screen potential contestants Saturday, Nov. 23 at the KTLA studios in Los Angeles. Would-be players should come as they are and not dress up in the wacky costumes the game is known for. That, presumably, comes later.

Participants must be 18 or older and not affiliated with NBC or the show's producers, Monty Hall Enterprises and Renegade 83. More information is available at (323) 935-1129.
---------

With Monty EP'ing, hopefully this won't suck. Rumor is that it will start on NBC and go syndie for 2003-04. Another game show on the air is always good with me.

Good god, here's hoping they don't allow Todd Newton to fuck up another classic game show. "Whammy" is pretty damn unwatchable.

And you know the modern zonks are gonna suck.

They need to get Joe Rogan off of Fear Factor and stick him here. He can try to "persuade" contestants to pick the box, or some other tough guy shenanagins.

Ah, yes... the Newton factor. He's a good guy; but I'd rather have Marc Summers host, IMODO.

Whammy's unwatchable not only because of Newton -- there's *way* too many prizes, and the Whammys aren't as, well, cool as the older ones. :)

Do they ever remake a classic tv show and NOT fuck it up?

Joker's Wild, Whammy, Match Game, Louie Anderson Family Feud, the list goes on and on...

The new, new family feud with the bearded guy from Home Improvement is actually pretty good. Louie Anderson sucked ass though.

Even Let's Make a Deal hasn't exactly escaped unscathed. The Big Deal, hosted by Mark De Carlo of Studs fame, 1995 or 1996ish. That show had all the charm of an obscene Christmas card.

Need I remind you of "Card Sharks"? The Bob Eubanks version was palatable (even if it killed off Press Your Luck), but the syndie version a while back? Ewwwww... you do NOT eliminate the polls and change them to Jaywalking questions! No! That's just... (shiver)

You do remember the (second) remake of "You Bet Your Life," don't you? Not many do, since it was cancelled in its first season.

Did you ever see the Dark Shadows remake? It wasn't that bad at all, the only problem was that NO ONE CARED. Also, and I just know I'm gonna hear shit about this one... ABCs Fantasy Island was decent.

Also, isn't Jeopardy a 2nd generation show? Didn't Jack Parr or someone like that originally do the show and they brought it back as the show we see today.

Well, let's not forget "Press Your Luck" was itself a remake of "Second Chance"... okay, so that never made it on the air, but still...

Art Fleming was the original host of Jeopardy. That was a *very* long time ago, however. Used to be you could win as much as a hundred big ones for getting your question right.

I LIKED Louie Anderson's Family Feud! In the beginning he stunk cause he just seemed like he didn't want to be there at all, but as time when on he got much better. Richard Karne(?) is kind of in the same boat--he seems lost at times but he may improve. Overall I like what they have done with the new Family Feuds; my wife and I have actually made it a tradition to watch it every weeknight at 12:30 before bed. They haven't changed that much, including the basic layout for the set, which is good.

IIRC, I think Monday's show should be the revealing of the *new* set. I could be wrong, but if I'm right, it'll be radical-but-following Wheel's minor changes for this year.

Regarding remakes, this one might have a chance just because Monty is EP'ing this. Some of the remakes didn't follow what made them work the first time... the original format.

EDIT: According to tvgameshows.net, the proposed host is going to be Al Roker.

Before anyone comments, he has hosted a game show before (ok, so it was on MSNBC -- but it wasn't half-bad). This would be, to my recollection, breaking the color banner, so to say, in the game show world; the most recent network daytime black game show host would have been Nipsey Russell in "Your Number's Up." Spencer Christian would be the recent syndicated host for "Triple Threat" on BET.

It's an interesting choice -- AND IT AIN'T TODD NEWTON! :)
