NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers went home looking for answers, relieved that quarterback Tommy Maddox could move his arms and legs Sunday after being taken off the field in an ambulance.
In a 31-23 loss to Tennessee, Maddox was tripped up by safety Lance Schulters and tossed the ball to Antwaan Randle El as he fell forward. Linebacker Keith Bulluck hit Maddox's shoulder with his forearm, and Maddox rolled onto his head and did not move. ADVERTISEMENT Maddox had no sensations, but was conscious and talking as he was strapped to a backboard. Trainers and doctors worked on him for at least 15 minutes, then Maddox was lifted onto a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance on the field and taken to Baptist Hospital's trauma unit.
Steelers spokesman Ron Wahl said they would not discuss the nature of Maddox's injury until Monday. Wahl said Maddox was awake and alert, had talked with his family and was able to move all of his extremities.
Safety Lee Flowers said it was tough to keep playing after Maddox was hurt.
``You know sometimes we are fans, too. You look at a guy who has busted his tail for 10 years to get into this position for him to get hurt, it is tough,'' Flowers said.
Damn, hope he recovers. Promote this thread! | | drjayphd

The worst offender, I felt, was Hines Ward, who basically made it sound like Maddox never deserved the starting job in the first place. Since I'm no Steelers fan (lifelong Cincinnati resident, so I'm saddled with the curse of being a Bengals fan), I don't keep track of their game stats, but I wonder if Ward was getting thrown to less often with Maddox at QB and that was the basis for his pro-Kordell rambling. | Zeruel

Curiosity and an overwhelming desire to avoid the work i should be doing led me to check it out. Ward still has over twice as many receptions as any steelers receiver outside of Burress. He's also only about 100 yards shy of his total receiving yards last year.
On the other hand I dont know how many of his catches this year were off Kordell, but he didnt complete many passes period from what I remember so Maddox cant have been avoiding him too much. | Mr. Boffo

Speaking as someone who picked him up in my fantasy football league, I can say that his production did seem to be less than normal for the weeks that Maddox was the quarterback, with more passes, in turn, being thrown to Plaxico Burress.
EDIT: Now I see dMr's post and I feel I must research this matter more fully. After looking at each game, I see that Ward caught at least as many passes as Burress did almost every week. So I must have been imagining things.
DOUBLE EDIT: By the way, dMR, Maddox completed 62.8% of his passes, and Stewart completed 62.3%. That's a lot different from "hardly any of his passes were completed." The only real differences between them is Maddox threw more TD passes.

Yeah I know. I was just makin a smart arsed throw away comment. I generally don't think Kordell's too bad, but man when I saw him in week 2 against the Raiders, oh sweet lordy did he suck.

| #12 Posted on 21.11.02 1511.25 Reposted on: 21.11.09 1512.29 | Players happy or not I have a real problem with Kordell. Kordell has never consistent. Last year he looked great and in 97 he looked great. The NFL is not the olympics, you bring your best game every year, not every 4 years. My thoughts prior to this season were if Kordell can duplicate his success I will change my tune. Unfortunately he went out and threw pick after pick and just generally sucked.
Furthermore one of my biggest problems with Kordell is his inability to go through progressions. Kordell has always had a real problem with knowing when to run and when to make a throw. Too often when he should run he doesn't and when he does run he had someone open and should have made a throw. Maddux looked for guys like Kreider and Mathis. Kordell tends to look Hines, Plax, Bruener, flats- in that order. If none of those options are open he runs. Then sometimes he knows he doesn't have a running lane and forces a pass to one of the above and throws a pick. Maddux would look through his primaries and try to dump it off to Kreider or the slot man if he could make the throw.
And then there are times Kordell looks brilliant- like against Baltimore last year. Bttom Line: we were winning with Tommy, so we need to stick with Tommy. If anything we learned the Steelers play best with a drop back pocket passer at Quarterback. If the Steelers are smart they will trade the Bus (yes I know it sounds crazy but we have Famous Amos)and our first round pick to Texas for the second pick overall and take Byron Leftwich to build their future on. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
