I realise this is a question fraught with the possibility of religious controversy, but I trust my fellow Wieners to remain civilised.

A friend wants to get his Grandma onto the internet, primarily for web access & email. Grandma is a smart person, but stereotypically technophobic : "Ooooh, I couldn't possibly figure that out! Only you *smart* people can do computer things." Yeah-yeah-yeah.

So the question is : What kind of system should my friend get for Grandma?

Given the amount of swearing at Windows that I do, I have trouble imagining foisting that onto Grandma. (But that may just be that I'm a techno-geek, fiddle with systems, & have expectations of them behaving reasonably. I know -- silly girl.)

I have no clue about the Mac anymore -- haven't had cause to be near one in years. Once upon a time, that was the really easy, turn-key system. Is that a Grandma-friendly option?

There's been much hoopla for years about "Internet appliances" hooked to your existing TV. Anybody have any applicable experiences with anything like that?

Additional parameters:

-- Grandma is not geographically close by. Meaning if something breaks (or gets corrupted, or virus'd, or whatever), there isn't anybody who can just drive over (the river & through the woods) to Grandma's house to fix the problem.

-- Obviously needs to be pretty bomb-proof, & easy to use.

-- Grandma is not going to be remotely interested in any other software. Computer games & audio/video editing are not her thing.

-- Grandma doesn't have a big footprint available for a monitor & such. For that reason, I'm thinking that a laptop is the way to go.

So, suggestions?
