In my long career as a lurker under a different name on the old board, I noticed that there were often discussions of shows for small children. Since my daughter's day care has closed, I am desperately seeking new shows that will keep both her, 4 1/2, and her brother, 18mo, entertained. Currently, I get subjected to the Nick Jr. lineup in the morning and I can feel myself getting stupider by the day as Franklin, Oswald, and Dora rot my braincells. I have all the Veggie Tales and Blue's Clues tapes and I refuse to allow the great purple satan into my abode. So, what can I watch with them that will not cause me to go into a sugar coma or wish to burn my eyeballs out with 16 molar HCl? And yes, tv is important because the snow currently on the ground here is taller than my son and up to my daughter's chin.

Hmmm...that's a hard one. My kids LOVE Nick, Jr. Not that *I* do or anything.

Do you get Between the Lions? It's a reading show that my oldest (also 4 1/2) absolutely adores.
I think Dora is quality TV, BTW. It focuses on recognition and three-step direction memorization. I haven't seen Oswald, but don't like Franklin.

Also, try Public Television. My kids also like Clifford, the Big Red Dog and Dragon Tales.

Cartoons sure ain't what they used to be...

I only know that I can change; everything else just stays the same.

Dude - see the little guy over there to the left - He's RPO, bay-bee. Ask DEAN what he thinks!

He's Rolie Polie Olie - and in his world of curves and curls, he's the swellest kid around.

I like RPO, my wife likes RPO, my son likes RPO, my daughter (the precociously verbal one) despises it with a passion. Unfortunately, our PBS station here stinks. I don't know if it is the station or the cable company but the reception is generally horrible which precludes trying to watch anything on that channel. Of course, right now is the best time of the day because Cartoon is showing old Bugs and Daffy which makes everyone happy.

For a 4 1/2 year old, I would recommend my five year olds favorite show- CLIFFORD on PBS. I personally hate it but the lil punkin loves it and that's the main thing. I'm thinking Dora the Explora is a more 2-3 year old show (as it is my 2 1/2 year olds fave and my wife reinforced it by saying it aimed for the younger toddler set). The wife recommends ARTHUR and BETWEEN THE LIONS for a 4 1/2 year old. She also recommended the BOOKWORM BUNCH but I think she is delirious at this point because NOONE should subject themselves to that crap.

And Pie-Man is so right about the rulingness of the Rolie Polie One.

You might want to try Invader ZIM. I dunno though, they might be a little too young for that, plus the viewing time(9:30 PM, Friday night) might be too late as well.

Anyways, it's on Nickelodeon, and, IMO, is the best new cartoon on TV today, for young or old.

According to Mick Foley, Smackdown! is good family programming and he and HIS 5 year old daughter watch it all the time.

In all seriousness, I don't know what to recommend to watch, as the shows my little brother watches when I go home generally can't keep my attention. However, one show managed to annoy me more in 10 minutes than any other show EVER. It's called Notty (or is it Noddy?) and it's from England I think. A bunch of wooden dolls that sit around and engage in the most IRRITATING conversations and plots ever put on the television set!

I should ask my mother what good childrens programming he's into...but she'll probably wonder if I've gone and gotten someone pregnant.
