I'll be the first to admit to my very limited knowledge of wrestling, only having watched it for the last five years or so, and then only WCW/WWE, and not having much of any knowledge of the backstage shenanigans that apparently go on. Having said that, I was curious if there have ever been times when two guys have acted out their aggressions towards each other in the ring by working stiffer than usual, for example. That Perry Saturn jobber squash is what made me think of this, from what I understand he just slaughtered that guy out of the blue, with no one really understanding what had happened until afterwards.

On a Shotgun taping, some jobber blew a spot and almost hurt Saturn, and Saturn literally beat the crap out of this kid in the ring. Shortly after that, Saturn was running around with a mop.

Probably the best known example was Regal and Goldberg. Goldberg was in the midst of his streak (what about 20 into it, or 30?) and Regal worked him for about 4-5 miniutes on the mat before jobbing to the spear and jackhammer.

I knew I loved Regal for something besides his Mans Man gimmick!

Yes, I mentioned the Benoit-Sullivan feud in a thread discussing Benoit's mic skills. Benoit gave some pretty damn good promos during his feud with Sullivan. Maybe Benoit needs to have a real hatred for more of his opponents. It seems to bring out the best in his work on the mic.

Also, Steve Austin and Chris Adams had a great feud in World Class with very similar issues as Benoit and Sullivan, with the added dimension of Chris Adams being the guy that trained Austin as a wrestler. Pretty good feud with some excellent matches.

It was more Sullivan having a hatred for Benoit, which I would find quite justified, considering Benoit stole Sullivan's wife away from him.

Apparently, there's hatred on both sides of that feud. It was Benoit's dislike of Sullivan that pushed him to leave WCW, the day after winning the World Championship, and heading to the WWF.

Here's the Observer on that Perry Saturn thing:

During the match, Saturn's opponent, Brian Gamble, stopped selling Saturn's attacks, and kept saying to Saturn that it was his home town and he had to win the match infront of his family. He wouldn't go to ground, and twice double-crossed Saturn during spots. Saturn's eye started bleeding after Gamble kicked him, and Saturn took him down to calm him. At another point in the match, Saturn busted Gamble's nose. At the end of the match, Saturn had to muscle Gamble into position for the finisher, and Gamble at first wouldn't tap to the submission. Saturn was forced to apply it more legitimately, and when Gamble couldn't escape from the hold, he had to tap.

Then there are stiff workers

Depending on who you talk to, there have been all sorts of those:

Fit Finley, Steve Regal, Nikita Kolaff, Dick Murdock, Kevin Sullivan, Bruiser Brody, Low Ki, Stan Hansen and Dick the Bruiser come to mind

I think the Perry Saturn jobber squash he was referring to was with a jobber by the name of Mike Bell, this was the one that occured soon before the whole Moppy debacle.
In this match Bell didn't attempt to change the outcome of the match or anything, he just missed a potentially dangerous spot, causing Saturn to snap and beat the shit out of him. I wish I still had it on tape, it was great TV.

Concerning other shoot moments in matches recently, Brock vs Hardcore Holly, anyone? Reports say that Holly was up to his old tricks, working stiff with Lesnar and acting as dead weight during Brock's power moves. In the end, accident or no, Holly is out for a year. Moral of story, don't fuck with Brock Lesnar.

When I watched Mania 6 as a kid, I thought Roddy Piper and Bad News Brown were legitimately going at it after Piper came out painted half-black.

Sometimes people look like they're working stiff with Van Dam too, especially after he bludgeons them.

I seem to remember Angle having to school Rob Van Dam with a few legit suplexes after Van Dam wouldn't "roll with them". I think he did have some sort of heat with Angle stemming from Van Dam's stiffness. I also recall Angle on some sports show being asked about his broken nose and replying that the guy that did it (RVD) doesn't even deserve being mentioned.

I actually hadn't heard about the Gamble thing, but you'd think that someone that undisiplined wouldn't have even gotten a dark match with WWF/E.It just adds to my conviction that Saturn would do well with a "tough-guy" gimmick. The Regal thing I did hear about, and I would have enjoyed seeing that match. I can easily believe that a group of people as intense and physical as wrestlers surely are would have limited patience with someone who showed their inexperience in those ways, especially if it involved missing a dangerous spot. Also, if you're wrestling someone you really don't like, wouldn't there be a great temptation to knock them around a bit?

As for being bitter...perhaps that's a result of my limited wrestling knowledge. If so, then maybe ignorance is bliss, and I intend to remain as happy as possible :).

From what I hear the Regal-Finley match from Uncensored '96 is supposed to be pretty brutal. I think that's just a case of two stiff workers letting it all hang out, though. Anyone seen the match in question?
