Does anyone else here remember Bozo? I was just thinking that with the 80's (Bozo mainly being a 70s and 80s icon) coming back and all (You are seeing He-man and GI Joe, Transformers, and all kinds of stuff out there)... why hasn't Bozo been brought back? I want to go into a Hot Topic and buy a damned Bozo t-shirt...

Well, Bozo's only been GONE from the airwaves for a year or so. (WGN canned the show in 2001.)

I always fantasized about being able to run in and kick the crap out of any kid that missed the 2nd or 3rd buckets on the Grand Prize Game.

Local Chicago TV and one of the original superstations - they got dropped by most cable systems when they briefly became either a UPN or WB affiliate.....they were most famous though for Harry Caray & the Cubs

Riki, WGN originally was and still is a local Chicago station. However it aired in many many parts of the country, kind of like WWOR used to, hence everyone in the country getting to know Harry Caray and Bozo the Clown. At least I think that's accurate.

And I loved Bozo growing up. I made my folks build me my own version of the grand prize game so I could practice in case I ever got on the show, and joined Cub Scouts so I could skip the 10 year wait for tix back in the mid-80's. And while I could live without a Bozo t-shirt, I DO want a Marshall Brodein Magic Kit....DOODY DOODY DOODY DOODY!

Unfortunately, as hard rocking as Bozo is to all of us, most kids wouldn't realize how sweet he "used" to be. The same can be said for both the revivals of Transformers and He-Man. Dear god have they tarnished those fine memories... I'm sorry, but I'd rather vomit blood for the rest of my life than watch another episode of that new He-man crap.

I grew up in Chicago watching Bozo, Ray Raynor and Garfield Goose with Frasier Thomas. It is amazing how Bozo evolved over the years. Their last show was 1 or 2 years ago, it just couldn't compete anymore. When I was a kid (early 70's, I am 37 now), there was a 7 year waiting list to get tickets for the show. Parents would literally order tickets when they found out they were pregnant!

I got WGN in Omaha, and Bozo was awesome. OF COURSE I set up my own buckets to practice. As far as the T-shirt goes, I was thinking of something along the lines of those "Serial Killer" shirts. That would be awesome.
As far as the new He-man goes... it is not bad, I think. But Transformers Armada is TERRIBLE! It is like a damned Pokemon show all over again. Why they could not do one along the lines of Beast Wars is beyond me...

It has always saddened me, to think that Bozo was the definitive kiddie show for most of the country. You all were subjected to a dorky clown. (* ducks flying objects *)

But those of us who grew up in Arizona were blessed by the best kid show of all time :
Wallace and Ladmo.

It was the ultimate "don't talk down to kids" TV show. They showed all the best cartoons (notably Rocky & Bullwinkle, & all the Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies), & did skits that were totally in keeping with that level of humour. It was totally amazing.

emma, emma, emma...poor poor girl. First off, they often showed R&B clips on Bozo. And NOTHING can compare to Wizzo. Not a damn thing on earth isn't made better by being rubbed with the Stone of Zanzibar. And more seriously, if you watch Bozo stuff all grown up, you see how many cracks were thrown in to amuse the parents in the crowd. I remember watching the final episode (the one where noted Bozo fan Billy Corgan serenaded him), and being stunned with how many jokes would have flown over the head of the kids in the audience.

Well, probably being one of the few to see both (I moved from Chicago to Phoenix when I was 12), I will cop out and say both were great. They were both were very smiliar in putting on goofy skits that had some appeal to both kids and adults. Forced to choose, I would have to go with Bozo, as I saw that with "kid's eyes" and is a fond memory of childhood. I was older when I saw Wallace & Ladmo, but it was still pretty good, and appreciated it more as I saw older clips from tribute shows.

-- The good ol' fair-and-square games... IIRC, Cooky did win a couple of times. However, his winning record would be comparable to what the Bears are playing like now.

-- As much as Joey D'Auria tried to keep hope alive, nobody was like Bob Bell. Period.

-- Rocky and Bullwinkle wasn't the only cartoons shown; you had Batman and Robin, Superman, Looney Tunes, etc.

-- Finally, it was fun to see the amount of inflation that went on in the show for the Grand Prize Game. It went from a bike and silver dollars to, what, $100 and a trip to Walt Disney World? The GPG was the shit, though. :)

As far as I know, there were only three "independent" superstations; WTBS-Atlanta and WGN-Chicago were the first ones to be on national cable systems, and WWOR-Secacus. Ironically, no West Coast channel has ever been designated one.

As time has gone on, WGN (for sure) and WWOR probably has had to change their national cable feeds due to syndex rules. WGN airs reruns/movies nationally, and WB locally. If memory serves me right, they also have covered their Morning Show, which used to be pretty good. Bill Weir was the shit. WWOR is a UPN affiliate now.

WGN is still a superstation. Their signal gets carried on many cable networks, as well as DirecTV (and not as part of that deal that gets you the West and East Coast affiliate station's feeds from ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.) However, they are affiliated with "web-let" The WB for portions of their evening programming. (UPN and The WB have no full-time affiliates like the Big Four do; they're basically independent stations that take UPN/WB programming in primetime.)

Oh, and in the early 1990's, Bill Weir was a local sports guy at WLUK here in Green Bay...back when they were still an NBC affiliate. Yes, he was the shit back then. Just awesome...and actually a nice guy off-camera, too. Rumor we heard was that after leaving Green Bay, and then moving on to Chicago, Comedy Central offered him Craig Kilborn's old spot on "The Daily Show," but he took some "Sports Machine"-type deal in LA.

So when Kilby headed over to CBS, they went with choice #2...Jon Stewart.

Oh, and in keeping of the spirit of this thread...Bozo RULED. I watched it all the time on WGN up here in Green Bay (superstation, remember?) back in the day. Grand Prize Game was always a dream of mine...but I'd probably have choked.
