I haven't had much time for the internet in the last few weeks, and I remembered the eligibility period for the RSPW awards incorrectly, so I missed the opportunity to nominate my favorite matches in the past year. I've been going through my tapes and I have narrowed my MOYTCs down to 12 matches to consider and re-watch and whittle down to the final five I will put on my ballot. I was surprised to learn that only five of these twelve had been nominated, so I'm posting this to encourage folks to consider the other seven as a write-in vote. These are the five on my list that are already nominated:

3/17/02 Hogan/Rock (WM)
5/27/02 RVD/Eddie (Raw Ladder)
7/1/02 Jeff/Taker (Raw Ladder)
8/25/02 HBK/HHH (Summerslam Streetfight)
10/20/02 Edge+Mysterio/Angle+Benoit (No Mercy)

Here are the seven that were not nominated, with brief comments on what I liked about them and why I feel they are worthy of consideration:

11/19/01 RVD/Dudleyz (Raw Handicap Table)
You may say that I am cruel, but I'm a sucker for a wicked bump, and RVD has an amazing ability to take them. When the Dudleyz hit the 3D to the table and it doesn't break, so they do it again, its a great bump and a great climax to a fun, vicious little match.

1/7/02 Spike+Tazz/Dudleyz (Raw Hardcore Tornado)
This is a very similar deal to the previous match. Tornado Tag is a great stipulation far too seldom used, and it was used to full advantage here. But the highlight of the match is when Tazz suplexes Bubbah onto a table, but only the leg breaks, so Spike improvises by doing the Dudley Dog on Bubbah through the table, while Tazz holds the table steady on account of the broken table leg. The ability to improvise something convincing when the planned spot goes wrong impressed me immensely.

1/14/02 Kane/Angle (Raw)
I can't believe no-one nominated this. This is the match where Angle introduced the running top-rope throw, what more can you ask for? How soon we forget!

7/21/02 Booker/Big Show (Vengeance Streetfight)
I can believe that this wasn't nominated, but look past your preconceived ideas of how good any match with the Big Show can possibly be, and recognize the greatness of the announce-table scissors kick and the Houston Hangover that finished the match.

8/26/02 RVD/Tommy (Raw HC/IC)
This was the most entertaining and innovative spotfest of the year. The ladder tricks were ingenious. Perhaps this was overshadowed by HHH/HBK the previous day, but it is well worth another look.

9/26/02 Mysterio/Angle/Benoit (SD!)
The incredible technical work of Angle and Benoit, with the added spice of Mysterio's high-flying, what could be better?

10/3/02 Mysterio/Benoit (SD!)
This was an incredible opportunity for both men to prove that they can carry a main event without a "franchise player", and they ran with it. It was an amazing blend of their contrasting styles, and I loved every minute of it.

It's weird how all of my favorite matches through the end of August came from the Raw side, and all of my favorite matches since then came from the SD! side.

Well, let me know what you think. If anyone else has matches that weren't nominated that they think should be considered, this would be a good thread to talk about it in.

I voted for the Eddie/RVD ladder match and lobby all Wieners to do the same.

I really considered nominating the Jeff Hardy/Undertaker ladder match for MOTY, but I figured I'd be the only guy voting for it. For some reason, that match really had me on the edge of my seat. I know it's foolish, but I really, truly thought Jeff might win it.

I agree with you. I thought Jeff would win and because of that level of belief-suspension I think it's a strong contender for MOTY. But, looking back, I think JR had as much to do with that match being great as UT and JH did.

I'll toss on something from NWA TNA - the six-man cruiser elimination match to determine contender ranks to the NWA "X Division" title, with Jerry Lynn, Low-Ki, Tony Mamaluke, Kid Romeo, Elix Skipper, and Christopher Daniels.

It started out just being a three-star cruiser schmozz, but some of the spots they came up with elevated it immensely - brilliant ones like Elix (who really needs to go back to wearing long pants, incidentally) literally bending over backwards to duck a flying kick, or Low-Ki reversing a top-rope suplex of some kind into a flying kick. Just great stuff. Plus it went better than twenty minutes.

I have to go with Edge/Eddie on Smackdown. I was at the taping, and the crowd reaction to the whole match was epic. I know we hear a lot about canned heat on shows, but in this case, I think the WWF toned down the crowd noise for TV. It was an incredible match that had me on my feet the whole time.

There have been a couple of other threads that provided links already; however, to summarise :

-- ballot , includes instructions on where to email the ballot

-- nominations

-- previous winners & award definitions

-- call for voting includes some general information

You should be able to copy/paste the ballot into an email message, make sure you're using plain text (CRZ is quite adamant about that!), fill in the blanks, & email as specified.

Cool thanks! Just one more question before I get to voting. Can I only choose from whatever's been nominated or do they allow for write-in votes?

CRZ's instructions on the ballot page says that write-ins are fine -- as sergeial suggests in the post that started all this discussion.

Well, I watched the first few matches last night, and I've ruled out the two Dudleyz matches from my final Ballot. They were fun, brutal matches, but not quite MOTY level, considering all of the great competition they have this year. Kane/Angle and Hogan/Rock are still in the running, though. They're similar matches, in that they both started slow, and made me think, "Why did I think this was a MOTYC?" at first, but then the near falls ramped up the drama, and I started getting into it, making me say, "Oh, yeah, that's why."

The high point of Kane/Angle, besides the running top-rope throw, was Kane kicking out after an Angle Slam, which really got the crowd--and me--into it.

The most memorable parts of Hogan/Rock was the way the crowd went wild for Hogan's back rakes of all things, the Hulk-up followed by the Rock kicking out after the leg drop, and getting out of the way of a second leg drop attempt, and the double-Rock-Bottom-People's-Elbow finish. And of course the real emotion you could see in each man when Hogan makes the "He's the man" gesture to the Rock, and the Rock gets all humble.

Anyway, four down, eight to go!

/sarcasm on/ What a chore... /sarcasm off/

Best Match
1st: 03/17/02 Rock v. Hulk Hogan.
2nd: 08/25/02 Shawn Michaels v. Triple H
3rd: 05/27/02 Eddie Guerrero (IC) v. Rob van Dam (ladder RAW)

That's how my voting went down. I think with only one major fed now, it will be a long, long time before you ever see something as epic as the match at WMX8. It was one of those moments that made you stand up and shout out loud "Yes, I love professional wrestling and yes, I'm damned proud of it".

HBK v. HHH at SS was a sight as well. HBK astounded me from start to finish. Maybe it was because I had such low expectations of him, but HBK proved on that night that he was still the man. I remember the point in the match that I marked out the most was when he nipped up. That was wonderful.

The ladder match from RAW was something special as well. I rewatched it a few days ago and it still was as great as it was 5 or 6 months ago. One thing that should definitely add to this match was the idiot who interfered. This could have been disastrous. However, Eddy and RVD, like the true professionals they are, kept going and delivered.

Honorable mention for me is the RVD-Dreamer match at MSG. Dreamer showed me that night how much love for professional wrestling he really has.

I was just reading VanillaSky's post and agreeing about the great things regarding the four matches he mentioned, but when he got to RVD/Tommy, I thought to myself, "What do you mean 'honorable mention'? You get to vote for five in each category, right?" I then took a look at the ballot and realized that he is correct, there is only space for three votes in each category. How can this be! Wasn't it five in previous years? Why did it change? I was having a hard enough time picking five matches to vote for! I had just finished re-watching my twelve finalists, and had worked my way down to seven matches and just had to rule out two more. Now I have to rule out four of them!

Well, in that case, here's my tenative ballot:

1) Jeff/Undertaker (Raw Ladder Undisputed 7/1/02)
2) Michaels/HHH (SummerSlam Streetfight 8/25/02)
3) Mysterio/Angle/Benoit (SD! 9/26/02)
or
Hogan/Rock (WM 3/17/02)
or
RVD/Tommy (Raw HC/IC 8/26/02)
or
Mysterio/Benoit (SD! 10/3/02)
or
RVD/Eddie (Raw Ladder IC 5/27/02)

Well, I guess I'll just have to watch those matches again to decide who to put in the number 3 slot.

Hey - it's good to see someone besides me respects the UT/Hardy ladder match, sergeial. I didn't see it in the nominations and didn't know you could do write-ins, so I voted for RVD/Eddie ladder match instead.

If I could rescind my ballot, I would change it to UT/Hardy. That match really had me.

Don't get me wrong, I really really dug the Hardy/Taker match. Jim Ross proved in that match that he still had it, and Jeff Hardy was brilliant. However, I just thought that it wasn't as good as the other four.

Hey, Parts Unknown, I don't mean to make you feel bad, seeing as you can't take your vote back or anything, but Jeff/UT was nominated, it's right there on 7/1 between an X-Division match on 6/26 and a Mexican match on 7/5.

VanillaSky, I agree, when there are only three votes some great matches are bound to fall off one's radar, and which ones is just a matter of personal taste. I loved each of the matches you mentioned, but I think I'm only going to end up voting for one of them.

Speaking of only being able to vote for three, does anyone else remember having five votes last year? Yahoo threw my account out for non-use, or I'd just look up my ballot, but I could have sworn that last year I voted:

Angle/Shane (KOR Streetfight)
Angle/Benoit (Raw Cage)
Austin/Benoit (SD!)
TLC III (SD!)
Angle/Austin (SummerSlam)

Can anybody confirm that we were allowed five votes per category last year? And, if so, why the change? Cutting my vote down to just three matches is like deciding which kid to sell... I think I'm going to give my #3 match to Mysterio/Angle/Benoit, but I am sad to not vote for any RVD matches...
