So there I was in sunny San Diego two weeks ago. I opened up a phone book, but alas, no listings for

Zimmerman, Guru.

Loved what I saw, although I can't imagine riding a bike on some of those hills.

This is EXACTLY why I have an unlisted phone number

I'm glad you liked it here. Where did you stay? I highly recommend Paradise Point Resort / Spa for out of towners...

I could have sworn it was common knowledge that my first name wasn't Guru

-- Aaron.

I was in town to see my brother-in-law graduate from Marine Boot Camp. We stayed on Clairmont at the Best Western (when travelling with a wife and 3 kids, cheaper can be better).

I was just hoping to find a listing under "Guru". While I *thought* it was Aaron, I really didn't care whether or not I actually found anything. That would start sounding like a storyline or something

The Best Western eh? I'm not 100% sure, but I think that is the hotel that I lived in for a week last year when my escrow got screwed up and I was homeless for a bit.

Was it right next to a Carrows?

I work about .5 mile from there... if thats the same place. It's right across the street from Di Chan - the best Thai food in San Diego.

(Also, Comickaze, the best comic shop in San Diego)

I don't think so. It was about 2 blocks from I-5. Pretty much surrounded by gas stations and a thrift store.

It was neat watching the locals watch us Wisconsites when we jumped into the outdoor pool. Damn, it was cold, but I was swimming (outdoors) and golfing in January for the first time in my life!

Yeah, I was wearing shorts two weeks ago, remembering winter in Northern California - where it doesn't even snow.

I don't know how you people do it. If I want to see frozen water, I'll walk over to 7-11 and get a Slurpee.

(That is a different hotel. The one I'm talking about is off of I805)

We've got ourselves a heat wave this weekend. It's gonna be in the low 50s! I might have to take the pool cover off.

Well, maybe not.

Really, it's pretty easy. It's not like one day it's in the 70s, then we drop to the teens.

I'm sorry but weather in the 20's (Celius scale here) and no Snow is NOT January-like weather....that's more like June-August.

Although I can swim right now if I want ....I just have to go home we have an indoor pool! (OF course home is 5 hours away right now so it's really not whenever I want too anymore)

I don't know how YOU do it! I have been REALLY thrown off this year in what's being called a mild winter (temperature has dropped to -18 celcius just once and it was actually plus 5 today!) to the point where the normal "winter depression" that reportedly sets in (though I've never really noticed it before in me) hasn't seemed to hit alot of people I know.

Or maybe it's because I'm no longer in college and the stress level is alot less...stressful?

While I bitch and moan about the cold and snow often enough, I doubt I could live without it at this point. I won't take a vacation to the south in the winter time for the sole reason I know it's going to completely confuse the hell out of my system.

Yep, it takes a special breed to live up here

I only recently close my bedroom window. But, thats only because it was 2 degrees, and windy.

I don't know how you Californians can stand it. I lived in both California and Texas for awhile and I went NUTS. How can you live in a place with only one season? A place where it is always sunny? It was my dream to escape the snow, but I missed it. I missed fall even more. I guess I'm just east coast all the way.
I also missed being able to function without a car. What is it with places down south and out west where everything is sprawled out all over the place? Okay, rant off.

You know, I was thinking the same thing - how awful it is to have sun all year long - just the other day. I was at the beach enjoying a bar-b-que just after the first of the year.

Buffalo got 6 inches of snow that day.

You should have seen how broken up we all were, hanging out at the beach and having a party

Yeah, Gu, but up here in Maine, we have the ski slopes with the ski bunnies. Change of seasons is nice, don't ya know.

You have the ocean in the summer, the slopes in the winter, colored leaves in the fall (for us old folks) and of course, mud season in spring. Who could ask for anything more?

Yeah, well come talk to me in July. Here it will be warm bordering on hot, and there it will be hot bordering on nuclear crisp bordering on dear-god-my-skin-is-broiling-off. (I'm not a fan of the warm weather.)

I'm actually jealous of Buffalo. They've gotten buckets of snow and we've only gotten one substantial snowfall, which in the old NYC tradition instantly turned into charcoal slush.

We've been extremely lucky weather-wise in T.O. this year. Hell, it's 5 degrees Celcius (about 41 or 42 F) here today! That's WARM!

85 degrees Fahrenheit is nuclear hot?

Jeeze, just do what I do.... camp out in the server room at work. It's a chilly 64 degrees year round, day in day out.

Actually in NJ it feels like it's been 90-95 degrees with 80-100% humidity during the summer over the past 3 years. Fairly brutal conditions.

And yes, having a job that lets you have access to the server room is a big advantage.

Here are my SD anecdotes.

The first year I went out to SD for Comic-con (which I think was 1998), I was in the mall downtown (whose name escapes, but the one that was designed by Escher) and saw they had a huge dinosaur exhibit and the huge models were all built out of sand.

All I could think was "Wow. They are so confident that they won't get rain they can build giant sand dinosaurs outside and have no fear of them being washed away."

Of course, two years later, it rained three days of the convention and that was all people could talk about. "I can't believe I'm in San Diego and it's raining."

Most importantly, I got to see Tony Gwynn get a hit off Greg Maddux at the Murph.

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family...Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance...Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit crushing game shows, stuffing junk food into your mouth...Choose a future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?

Oh Lord.

I don't even want to start on Comic-con.

I'll probably have to go again this year. *shudder*
