AS Adema beat Stade Olympique l'Emyrne 149-0, AS Adema scored 0 goals, as 149 were all own goals...

both teams were 1st class teams, and this is the new all time scoring record for 1st class teams...amazing...and it was a championship game.

the cause of the own goals? a bad ref call...

this would be the same as all Big ten schools scoring safty after safty in protest of bad calls...

Actually, we prefer to find opportune pictures that express our opinions of the calls and publish them in the college's newspaper... sorta like this one.

That is kinda funny in an ironic/absurd way, though. Like Big Bad said, awful sportsmanship, but still, what are the refs gonna do, yellow/red card 'em for unsportsmanlike conduct?

This report as written does sound a little fishy though. If SOE scored 149 own-goals in a game which ended 149-0 ... that means the score was 0-0 when the coach lost his temper with the ref and ordered his team to self-destruct. That seems a little extreme, even if there was a horrible call. I mean, it would take at least a few minutes to score 149 own-goals, so there would have been time to overcome the bad call and win the game.

UNLESS:

-- the coach is a genuine psychopath who fucking flipped during the course of a 0-0 game. That would indeed be awesome.

-- this was the return match of a home and home series in which SOE was losing badly. So even if this game was 0-0, SOE would be a goal or more behind in the championship. Or maybe it was a league game that SOE had to win big because of goal difference rules. This is a possibility.

-- it was in fact 148 (or 147) own-goals and SOE was losing 1-0 or 2-0 when Coach Manson went overboard. I would bet on this one.

Funny story anyways. Shows how much passion real football ignites in its fans. Remember, back in the '60s, a controversial game between El Salvador and Honduras actually ignited a short war between the two countries. It's a long but fun read.

sportscenter said last night that the winning team had clinched the league title before the game, and this was protest of the opposing coach flipping out on a meaningless game, and to protest bad calls all season long.

the teams basially said "you want them to win so bad, welll HERE!"
and scored OG after OG. and in soccer, if you get scored on, you get to kick off, and kicked it off into their empty net...unreal

Yep, the winning team had clinched the title the game before in the end of a double round-robin tournament. Adema were given a VERY sketchy penalty shot late in the game to clinch the title...so SOE decided to pull this little stunt.

It's clearly explained in the ESPN.com article about the event, but not so much in the Yahoo one that was linked.
