There are hundreds of mom-and-pop grease factories in Philly that are just as good as the big chains -- or better. Not that Pat's and Geno's (and Jim's, the other leg of the Cheesesteak Triangle, which I'd recommend over Pat's AND Geno's) are BAD... but it's like choosing between Domino's and Pizza Hut when the small restaurant down the block does it better than either one.
Some suggestions:
Pizza City - Red Lion & Academy Rds. Phillip's - 24th and Passyunk Jimmy's All American - Ridge Ave., near the Wissahickon Rail Station PhilaDeli - 5th and South Ishkabibble's - 4th and South, if you like chicken cheesesteaks Drexel Hill Style Pizza - just outside of town, Routes 3 and 320 in Broomall (get the Royal Steak) Dallesandro's - Wendover St., Roxborough (or Chubby's, right across the street) Victoria's Pizza - Morrell Plaza, Frankford and Morrell Ave. Speedy Pizza - NE Philly, Fairdale and Knights Rd. Moffett's - W. Tioga St., between Broad and Germantown Ave., near Temple University Hospital
And remember -- cheesesteaks are With or Without, never settle for Cheez Whiz (Provolone or American or Cheddar or go home instead), and anyone who puts mayo on a cheesesteak isn't from here.

Go to Tony Luke's on Oregon Ave. (under 95) or go into the Produce Terminal and go to Norm's. BTW- Tony Luke's roast beef Italian is the best sandwich money can buy- it makes any cheesesteak taste like shit mixed with grease. And yes I have traveled outside PA and NJ. Food in the south is very, very greasy-mayo-overfried tasting. California food gves you an instant case of the squirts, which I guess is worse. | evilwaldo

All over the region - Momma's in Bala Cynwyd if they are still open.

I was wondering when someone would mention Tony Luke.
I live about 45 minutes from Philly. I've been there a few times, but I cant say I've ever had a true Philadelphia Cheese Steak. I'm going to try to plan a day trip with my buds and head down. | StaggerLee
