Since I cannot very well put a pdf here, at least not to my knowledge, the following is the address for the latest Lines submission:

Enjoy. Respond as you find necessary.

Actually, if you go to the following link, everything on the Lines will be explained, at least, to the best of my ability.

Hope that helps out.

I love these Lines ... the most original way of recapping a wrestling show I have ever seen. Great job as always.

One question though ... I've noticed a similarity (in the layout and momentum lines for example) between these recaps and horse racing forms. I was watching the Breeder's Cup at my local track and was laughing comparing the two. Something along the lines of "Volponi gamely at the start, came on at the stretch, F5s the Big Show to win the Classic!"

Is this where you got the idea for the Lines or am I seeing things?

Bullseye on the comparison. In fact, I make reference to that sort of thing on the Lines Key. I like that compact type of presentation, which is why I decided to use it in the Lines.

By the way, Volponi should never have won that race.

Robert--Do you have anywhere or are you open to discussing how you rate the actual matches? I have read the key, but what actually goes into your scoring? I usually know that an awesome Benoit-Angle affair with earn a triple digit score, but how do you "quantify" that?

I am not sure how best to answer that, but I will try.

Now, the scoring form is somewhat formulaic, so every match can be reasonably compared against each other for any given show (which is to say that an 80 on one show is better than a 78 in the same show or three shows later).

More specifically, it goes somewhat like this. I look at the elements of a match, speed, action, spots, start, finish, and others which I know are there but I cannot quite recall at the moment. Then, given the length of the match, I try to set a baseline of sorts. Short, one minute affairs will not have much expected of it, as will be reflected in this baseline, where your average five minute deal will have reasonable expectations to answer for in the baseline. If the baseline is lowered, it is not so much that it distorts the comparison between match scores.

After establishing these, I compare elements (which are individually scored) against the amount of time the match was given. Now, a reason why requisites are adjusted for higher scores is because without such, a twenty minute match with only fair elements could end up receiving a 90 or 100, which could be undeserved. So some adjustments are made, akin to an exponential graph.

Another thing I look at is the balance of control in the match. Now some matches are not meant to have any, and I try to account for that, but most of the time, it is important that both competitors/teams get a reasonable share of the offense.

I try to keep personal opinions out of the ratings, with the obvious exception of how scores are generated in the first place, unless I can make a strong argument that accounts for it, which will usually be explained in the comments to the right of the match lines.

One more thing on the length aspect, some matches, even though they could go ten minutes, may only have really four or five of considerable action due to lapses, commerical breaks, etc, which is why I claim to evaluate minutes of most relative quality.

So, I compare elements to the relevant muber of minutes it held over, then account for match balance as reasonably necessary, then toss in any added effect such as well-placed interference, or other points of interest, then assign a scaled score based on all of this. I do check the scores of a show against each other, and against scores of previous shows in a best-effort to maintain consistency.

(Breath)

OK, I really hope that helped out. Repost if you wish me to clarify any of this.

Ha ha, true ... it would be kind of like watching Matt Hardy beat Brock for the Title. Bizarro world. But on the other hand, the race wasn't even close -- the big names didn't even pressure Volponi, so good for him and Santos.

I thought E Dubai was the longshot with a chance ... I had him to place at like 38 to 1, and he led for the first mile. Tired himself out and finished 11th. Doh!

One thing I will give Volponi credit for, is that he maintained a good stalking post throughout, similar to the way War Emblem did in the Preakeness this year (and it did not hurt that he was not quite on the rail). E dubai, I think, used a little too much on the break (but he had to being on the rail and if he didn't, he risk being boxed in), and even if he did not, I don't know how how well he would have held on. Medaglia D'Oro, what can I say, can't catch a break sometimes and he has had Pincay Jr, and Bailey riding him. By the way, did you read about the pick six controversy for the Breeders Cup?

Next year, the BC Championships come to my home track at Santa Antia, and I will definitely be trackside.
