They won't be listed among anyone's all-time top 20 Tag teams, but I have to believe these two had one of the most effective tag teams in the sport in the 80's.
I'm writing about Playboy Buddy Rose and Pretty Boy Doug Somers, the AWA nemesis of the very young Rockers tag team of Janetty and Michaels.
Rose is probably better known now for his ridiculous "Blow Away" weight loss spoofs he did during a run in the WWF. But he was quite a draw in the Portland area, and in the AWA proved that he could rile up a crowd with the best of them, given the mike. He could get around pretty good for a pear-shaped guy, had some skills, and looked like the grown-up version of the gap-toothed rich kid in your neighborhood that used to beat you up. You hated him from the moment he corrected the ring announcement of his weight.
Somers, well, imagine an older, less strong Wayne Bloom. Or if you can't do that, Somers was a tall, thin veteran with bleached white hair (like Rose). Certainly not a "Pretty Boy," Somers was the more or less silent worker of the pair, a la Bobby Eaton. He was a solid worker who wasn't afraid to put on the crimson mask.
As you could imagine, these two having the world tag titles instead of the heartthrob Rockers made the audience insane at their matches. Add to that the old-school psychology by the rulebreakers (cutting off one of the Rockers JUST BEFORE THE TAG, switching on the doubleteam, etc.)....HOW DARE THEY DO THAT TO OUR BELOVED ROCKERS!
The Rockers brought a willingness to kill themselves to the matches, which amplified the pure evil of Rose and Somers. The Rockers would bleed buckets, as eventually would the bad guys.
I guess I bring these guys up because I miss the storytelling and teamwork in the old school tag matches. You didn't need to set up tables all around the ring or climb a ladder to get the crowd going. It took a ridiculously over tag team such as the Rockers, and a pure evil team like the Pretty Boy and the Playboy. Substance over style...tough to find these days.
