Ok, i'm a bit behind the times, (strike that up to being a poor mofo! ... ) But I need the advice of the Weinerville Gamers.

Ok. Here it is. I've got some money to spend. I'm kicking the idea around that I'm going to get either a PS2 or a XBox. Now, I think the clincher for me will be which system has the best DVD player. Under that stipulation, which system should I get?

And before I get an answer of "Well, if you want a DVD player, buy a dvd player ... I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone
Thanks for the help gang.

Personally, either system's DVD player is not nearly as good as a stand-alone DVD player. I think you would be better served at buying the system based on its gameplay-
Personally, I like the Gamecube... but Playstation 2 has a lot of good games, probably would be my second choice-
Seriously- don't buy a system based on the DVD option- it is not worth it. You can get a decent DVD player for under $200 nowadays anyway... and you will like that better than watching movies on a video game system..

I definitely agree with Pool-Boy. However, another option is to add a DVD-Rom to your PC. They're not too expensive, and as long as your monitor is not too small, the quality is excellent. I'm assuming that since you're admittedly poor, you don't have a huge TV or surround-sound-equipped living room you're trying to supplement with a DVD player.

I really enjoy having a DVD-rom on my computer. I already have a pretty fast read/write speed on my CD-rom, and having the extra drive makes burning CDs that much faster. I used to have to rip the songs, store them on the hard drive, and then burn them.

I'm rambling, and am too new to get away with it. I'll shut up...

Unfortunately, my gut response is "If you want a DVD player, buy a DVD player." Both systems play DVD movies adequately, but neither one is as full-featured as a typical dedicated DVD player. Deciding between game systems by their DVD-playing capabilities is sort of like deciding which car you want to purchase by which one includes the best radio.

If you're going to use it for playing GAMES... I'd absolutely go with the PS2 over the Xbox, without a moment's hesitation. If you're absolutely hooked on Nintendo's franchise titles (Mario games, Zelda games, etc.), consider the Gamecube, but if you're not, the PS2 gets my nod there as well. I'm slowly coming around on the Game Boy Advance (the Bubble Bobble Old & New cart is superb), but that's a very different type of system.

I concur. I own all three systems, and, while I personally have gotten the most life out of the Gamecube myself (Animal Crossing, SSB Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, etc.), the Playstation 2 is a *far* better system than the XBox, and, since you seem to be concerned with the DVD features, you don't have to buy anything extra to play DVD movies on your Playstation, which should be enough to push that over the edge.

And, besides, while the next-generation WWE games all leave a lot to be desired, the Smackdown series is far and away the best, and the sequel looks wicked pisser.

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I didn't make the question really clear. The system I'll buy is the best gaming system. The capper would be which played DVD's better, you know, give it that slight edge.

I think i'm gonna go with the PS2.

You guys are great! Thanks.

to paraphrase The Brain:

My 2nd favorite dvd players are the x-box and ps2, all the rest are tied for first.

the 2 systems suck at dvd playback, but they both suck equally

Buy an Apex AD-1500 or whatever the cheap one is at Wal-Mart. It costs about $70-80 depending. Then buy a Gamecube.

You'll be out $220 plus tax instead of $200 plus tax - but you will get better quality DVD playback - plus you will get a Gamecube.

I only own 7 Gamecube games, but I would have to say that if you find slow load times to be a chore, then the GC is a better system than the PS2.

Most games are available across multiple platforms - so it really depends on how you feel about the Animal Crossing / Mario / Zelda / Metroid -vs- GTA3 / GTA Vice City issue.

Xbox - I would take a pass on this system. I've tried to make myself want one multiple times... there just isn't anything compelling there for me.

Don't forget PS2 has the Final Fantasy series, a whole bunch of cool Sega series out or coming out, the Metal Gear Solid series, and all those cool games you knew and loved on PlayStation One (that alone is what decided ME on the PS2/X-Box/Gamecube deal.) I've been thinking of also buying a Gamecube, but the only game that makes me want an X-Box is Dead or Alive 3 (and that new volleyball game of theirs, heheh.) Here's hoping the exclusivity on that title is almost up.

If you like fighting games at all, get a PS2! Tekken Tag and Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, Soul Caliber is coming, Capcom vs Snk2, Marvel vs Capcom 2 is coming also.

Guru nailed it right on, and everyone else made the key point; the DVD playback of consoles is rather poor. If DVD is all you want, just get a player at Future Shop.

As for consoles, each person has their own favorite. I was torn between the GameCube and PS2, but what swung the deal for me as the 1st Party games and as well as the hopes that Sonic Team would continue to deliver the goods (also that my best friend has a PS2, so I can play that anyway). But even if he didn't have that, I'd still go with the GameCube. I'm a fan of both systems and their games.

The X-Box is in a rut right now. They have Blinx (but if I wanted platformers I'd go Cube), Morrowwind (RPG's are cool, but PS2 has Final Fantasy plus others and also the Cube is getting MOTHERHUBBARD SKIES OF ARCADIA, and Square is back), Ninja Gaiden (if I wanted harcore Ninja action, I'd go PS2 with ~SHINOBI), Toe Jam and Earl III (cool game), Halo (good), and Dead or Alive 3 (PS2 is the "King of Fighters"). PS2 is in league with Sega and Square, while Ninendo has Namco and Sonic Team on it's side (as well as Square making games for them again).

That's 6 games that are X-Box exclusive, and only 2 of them doesn't have competition which is better than it (Halo and Toejam and Earl). Also, other than those 6, the other games on the system aren't much to speak of (the exception being the $200 game from Capcom). Meanwhile, GameCube FIRST PARTY titles alone could mop the floor with all those but Halo....and come November 18th, I have a very good feeling that Halo is going to be in trouble.

And TJ&E doesn't look... er... all that great.

There are a handful of other Xbox exclusives that look vaguely interesting. Deathrow got a stunningly high review on IGN, Hunter: The Reckoning looks like a good party game (bring over three friends and hack up zombies), and I'm looking into Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for my PC (which has the required juice to do justice to it). Okay, I'm looking into Morrowind for AFTER I spend the next two months plowing into GTA: Vice City, but it's still on my list.

As for the Cube, I'd still be playing Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem while waiting for Cubivore and Fire Pro to come along. I'm not into Mario, Zelda or Metroid, Smash Bros. might be a rental, and Animal Crossing befuddles me (largely because I don't understand the appeal of the Sims, either -- I'll chalk it up in the "Maybe it's me" category). But I'd take Eternal Darkness (with the promise of Fire Pro to come) over Halo any day.

Don't forget Time Splitters 2, that game rocks. but, it's available for all the systems. And it rocks. And it's an FPS, and it rocks. I thought it was jolly good fun, anyway.

ToeJam & Earl 3 is a bigger disappointment than ToeJam and Earl 2! This game sucks, HARD. It's a huge disappointment in every possible way. I think they would have been better off sticking TJ&E 1 and a Genesis emulator on a DVD and releasing that.

Awesome, I'm not the only Skies of Arcadia fan here. I'm replaying the Dreamcast version to wet my appetite for the rerelease. For that reason and more, I want a 'Cube. I REALLY hope they tone down the random encounter rate, especially in the air... nothing sucks more than hunting for discoveries while getting attacked every 15 seconds.

But, PS2 has Suikoden III. So, I'm still undecided.
