I was pretty pumped for the season after the sweet ass time limit draw between the Avs and the Stars on opening night, as the NHL tried to slightly reinvent itself yet again with the "speed it up" rule about getting the puck dropped after a whistle. That kinda came to an abrupt THUD earlier tonight in Detroit when they played the Kings.

17 penalties in regulation (dig those 19 minutes for McCarty), 1 more in the scoreless OT. 3-3, it had plenty of exciting spots, but with a lot of questionable calls and several "enough already, ref" moments, it seemed like without the HUGE play of CuJo and the relentless Kings power play, the whole thing could have died a slow, painful death. I wonder if this was an isolated incident, or a sign of things to come.

I have made my 9:38pm train after both NYR games (7:05pm start) I have been to this year thanks to the "hurry up face-offs" - used to be a judgement call as to whether it was worth waiting around for the 10:38pm....of course the Rangers have been so bad the last few years that there were some nights when the 8:40pm looked like a very doable option.

You need to remember that In October a lot of bad teams look good and good teams look bad. The good players don't usually play a lot during the preseason so it takes a couple of weeks for them to get their games legs under them. Meanwhile, guys on bad teams were playing throughout the preseason so they already have their game legs under them as the season starts.

Looking at the box score it seems like there were a lot of penalties for things unrelated to the rule changes like high sticking, slashing, fighting, etc. that will be called no matter who is playing.
