I picked up this CD yesterday, and I am about ready to put my head in the oven. I know the reviews said it was a depressing CD, but Damn! I liked the downbeat "Mutations" and loved the acoustic "One Foot in the Grave," but this new one is almost too much of a bummer to listen to. I don't necessarily need Beck to be doing Prince imitations and singing about Norman Schwarzkoff all the time, but I feel this CD is missing something. Even at his most low-key, he used to try interesting things musically, and was fascinating to listen to. I'm just not feeling that with Sea Change.

But hey, this is the guy's what - 5th or 6th CD? - and the first one I haven't been crazy about, so I'll definitely give him a break. I'll try to listen to it more, too, when I feel like bumming out for a while, but I wonder - does anybody else feel the same as I do? Or completely different?

Well, since nobody else has been replying...I've only heard three songs (Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lost Cause), but yes it seems very...drab. Not fun or interesting to listen to at all, though I do like Guess I'm Doing Fine. Wouldn't call it terribly depressing, though, but then again I sometimes listen to some pretty down stuff.

It got ***** from Rolling Stone, then again so did Mick Jagger's last solo album.

It can't be ***** for "Paper Tiger" alone. That song is quite not good.

Paper Tiger might be my favorite song on Sea Change. The album is a bit sleepy at times, and it`s an album I respect more than truly like as much as Mutations or Odelay. (Did that make sense?) But it`s certainly a good album...just don`t listen to it while driving late at night.

I picked up my copy on Sunday. Listened to it four times back to back. It's sad and slow, but man is it good!

I have only heard most of it once, when they played a bunch of the songs one night on "Sound Opinions" here on WXRT. But what I heard kept me driving around the area to keep listening to it. I found myself thinking something which one of the hosts (Kot I think) said "this is the first sincere sounding Beck album, where it doesn't sound like there's a huge joke being played on the listener that he's not quite hip enough to get." or something like that. He sounds so....real on this one.

Beck is just experimenting with different directions, which is what a true artist should do. At least Sea Change is more accessible then Radioheads Kid A. Nowadays, there is so much electronic sampling in music, that I can understand how beck is going back to basics. As far as being depressing, I'm guessing 9/11/01 had an inlfuence on the albums more somber tone. And with the recent tragedies in DC/MD/VA, Arizona, Oklahoma, and even Russia, Im' not in the mood for catchy hip-hop beats and silly rhymes either.

Actually, I heard it was about breaking up with his gf of a pretty long time. Sure, 9.11 may have had something to do with it, but I think it was more the breakup.
