Okay, if this is true, this is probably the most surprised I've ever been with a story about an athlete doing something wrong/illegal. Found here on espn.com:

Puckett charged with felony, misdemeanor counts

MINNEAPOLIS -- Baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett was charged Friday with

felony and misdemeanor counts for an alleged sexual assault at a restaurant last month.

Hennepin County prosecutors allege that Puckett dragged a woman into the men's restroom at the Redstone American Grill on Sept. 6 and fondled her breast before she escaped.

Puckett was charged with one count of false imprisonment, a felony, and one count of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a gross misdemeanor.

The woman suffered bruises where her arm was held, on her breast, and a swollen ankle when her leg struck a doorframe as she was being dragged into the restroom, according to the criminal complaint. The complaint cited several witnesses to the attack.

Conviction on the false imprisonment charge could carry a penalty of up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. The sexual conduct charge is punishable by up to a year in prison and a $3,000 fine. However, County Attorney Amy Klobuchar said Puckett is more likely to face workhouse time and probation.

Klobuchar said Puckett is expected to turn himself in for booking on Monday, when he is expected to post $20,000 bail. She said his first court appearance is likely to be in two or three weeks.

''Like most Minnesotans, I remember watching Mr. Puckett help the Twins win two World Series, and he's a great Hall of Fame baseball player. But that night, in that bar, he was no one's hero,'' Klobuchar said.

Puckett's attorney, B. Todd Jones, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

This falls under the category of "Believe it after the trial" because this could be just another in a long series of cases where women saw dollar signs in their eyes and decided to try to ratchet up some charge just so they could work out some sort of financial settlement to their benifit.

Kirby Puckett always has appeared as a well spoken, polite, and genuine nice guy in front of the media. His work ethic on the field, and his work ethic off the field in the front office was and is great.

I heard a story last year about him in trouble with the law for beating up his ex-wife. I couldn't believe it - and didn't WANT to believe it...

And now this.

Giving the benefit of the doubt TWICE is getting to be difficult.

Don't know what to say, but sometimes the nice guys don't turn out so nice afterall.

That's true, I'm a nice guy, and I always finish last. Ask my girlfriend

*rimshot*

Better still, ask yours

*drum flourish*

Seriously though, sounds like a nuisance suit to me. And if we can give Doc Gooden, Strawberry and all those other overrated yahoos second chances, we can give one to one of the classiest gents ever to put on the uniform.

I can't say I have ever met Kirby Puckett, and I certainly don't know him personally, but I know a lot of really nice/good guys who do dumb shit all of the time. I mean REALLY dumb shit. I worked with a guy who was very well respected, liked by all, great worker.....until the day he was fired for grabbing some chick's boobs.

"Nice guy" and "smart guy" - very different, grasshoppah...

Yeah, really. Every one of us is just a step away from gross misdemeanor and/or felony sexual assault charges. "Only human" indeed. Sheesh.

This isn't the first time Kirby has been in trouble with the ladies. About a year ago, his wife (soon to be ex-wife) made accusations that Kirby had threatened her on numerous occaisions. Once with a gun to her head while she was holding one of their children when she questioned him about his infidelity. Another time he tried to get to her with by sawing down a door she locked in their home. There was an article or two when it happened last year, then it just disappeared, as well as Kirby. He used to host a 9-ball tournament and participate in other area charity events. Ever since the allegations he has stayed out of the public eye, with the exception of the playoffs. He traveled with the Twins to Oakland and Anaheim but kept a pretty low profile.
Kirby used to be one of my favorite players, but he has quickly fallen out of favor in the Twin Cities within the last year or so.

At least it was a WOMAN who accused him of sexual assault, not a teen girl, or a man. Look at the BRIGHT SIDE!

This is sorta off topic but....

I saw the interview with Kirby after the accusations and it seems weird how he could have been one of the best baseball players of his generation. He looks totally out of it and completley unathletic now. It's very weird to see him the way he is now. I wish I could just remember him cruising around the bases with that huge grin on his face after his clutch homer.
