After the King left(presumably to gang-bang the hos), Jim Ross was left to hold the weight of commentating the TLC match all by himself(since Cole works for SmackDown! now). He ended up doing an incredible job of calling the match without a color commentator, and made the high spots look sicker than they already were. Was Lawler holding JR down all this time?

If Lawler was holding JR down, that could explain his absence during the main event. HHH had him pulled from the broadcast due to gimmick infringement.

JR did a good enough job on the main event but it's obvious that his voice would never hold up doing an entire show solo. And as much as people bag on JR, his commentary make the production teams recaps that much better.

Ok, long answer.

Yes, J.R. has been held down by Lawler. Lawler's got a tendancy to let his mind wander off, to talk about anything but the match. J.R., does that too, but usually he gets back to the match eventually. One thing is is that, the biggest problem that people people had with Heyman was that he was too serious. Too focused on the match. Lawler is the complete opposite. He can't take even the most serious match seriously.

BUT, besides the TLC Match, I don't think J.R. could call a match alone. Just as I don't think that Cole could or (to a lesser extent I suppose) Joey Styles could when he was doing just that.

There is a reason that it is a broadcast TEAM. There is one guy who really knows his stuff to call the matches and provide analysis, and there is another guy to break that analysis down so that the common fan can actually understand what the hell the first guy is talking about. Same thing with angles. The play-by-play guy puts over the facts of the feud, the color guy puts over the "Why" of the feud.

I don't think that J.R. could exist without A color man. It just wouldn't work for any extended period of time. Should it be Lawler? I don't know. Lawler has a boost for experience, and a fan base (remember when he left how many people clambored for him to come back). When he is on (as he was when the product was hot), he can really relate the story to the audience. When he's not, he retreats back into his gimmick of "horny old man". Though, it's not really a gimmick then, now is it?

So maybe they need a new broadcast partner for him, but J.R. is no better without Lawler than he is with him. In fact, he's probably worse off without a color man. So, no, I don't think Lawler is holding him down. Not directly anyway.

The JR solo on RAW reminded me of a tape I watched recently of Smoky Mountain Wrestling with JR on solo PBP. Nice to know he's still capable of that.

Not that I'd ever expect that to continue, and even if it did, that it would be good. Lawler has his place and there are people who adore him. That's fine. But it was a nice treat to hear JR show he's still got it.

Then again, I'd like to her McMahon and Ventura on the mike again together. Not REGULARLY, but maybe a pay-per-view?

I thought JR did a great job and I still think he's the best in the business, though it seems he's lost a step or two.

But we also got to see him calling a match that's ideally suited for his talents - one with plenty of highspots that allow him to emote and bring home the impact of what the wrestlers are doing.

It seems, in my limited knowlege of the last 5 years, that JR first broke out during Mick Foley's Hell in the Cell match in '98. His classic bellowing of "Good God Almighty, they've killed him!" served to get Mick over (as was acknowleged in Mick's book), but it also got JR over as a play-by-play guy. He was a straight man who could also be colorful when the time was right. And a title win by Steve Austin didn't seem complete without JR yelling "Stone Cold! Stone Cold! Stone Cold!" after Austin hit the stunner.

Now, would JR be as effective calling some of the recent Smackdown matches? Maybe, maybe not, but last night was right up his alley.

Just give me any old tape with Gordon Solie, and I am reminded of how piss poor "good" anouncers really are these days.

Hell Mark Lawrence from WCCW was as good as JR has been the past 8 or 9 months
