I read on lordsofpain.net that on Wrestling Observer Live, they mentioned something about a possible Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle tag-team.

Take that for what its worth.

But...aren't they feuding? With each other? And why make them a tag team on a show w/out tag belts?

As much as the team would kick ass, I can't really see that as a positive for either guy.

On the show, they were talking about Eddy and his possible mini-turn after the match on SD with Edge. Dave then segued into how SmackDown is going to be pushing tag teams more (remember when Raw was doing this while the tag titles were on SD? Some things never change) and mentioned how good he thought Chavo and Eddy are together, then just casually mentioned the Benoit & Angle possibility.

I know you didn't say "LOP SEZ DAVE SEZ ANGLE & BENOIT TO FORM TEAM SMARK JIZZ 2000" but I just wanted to note that it was pretty much just something mentioned in passing with no real attention paid to it.

I don't see this happening at all. Maybe they'll become a heel tag team out of respect for the other - but other than that - nope.

Besides, it seems to me that they're positioning one of these guys to turn face anyway.

After all, this is two-thirds of the Holy Smark Trinity we're talking about. :)

They'll turn Benoit face, first. He works better as a tough-ass good guy.

I miss the Jericho/Angle team that terrorized the faces right after the brand split. They were such little shits.

Quick update on this from 1Dave:

Most of the top wrestlers on the Smackdown side have been told about the plans for a tag team tournament on that show. One would presume that if the plans are approved by Vince McMahon, that they would be creating a separate tag team title.

So perhaps, at the very least, there may be 1 or 2 tag matches with them in the tournament, presumably to further their feud and give a lesser combo a nice push in the tourney when they SPLODE.

If that tournament DOES happen, I got 10 bucks on Billy & Chuck. Call it a hunch.

I hope they don't put Benoit with Angle. Because it doesn't make any damn sense. As much as people bitch about stuff making sense, it's too soon to team these two together (unless they do something bad and Stephanie MAKES them team, which is lame because it begs the question why doesn't one of them just leave?). Plus, I think a Benoit/Angle promo would put me to sleep, literally. And I'd be pissed if I missed a classic Angle line because I fell asleep.

To me it doesn't seem like Benoit and Angle are on that bad of terms. At the end of Smackdown! they kind of looked like they were standing united in their defeat at the hands of Rey Misterio. Earlier in the show Benoit gave the "I respect Angle" spiel. Plus, just a few weeks ago before their fued got under way they were teaming up along with Eddie. So I don't think it would be that hard to put together a mutual respect angle where they team up to fend off that pesky Misterio (and get these supposed new tag titles).

It would be cool to see them with the titles, but too bad it would only be the "fake" WWE tag titles. They should get the real WWE tag titles on Smackdown! somehow and have Bischoff crown new champs on Raw.

What about the team of Mysterio and Kidman? They already have some belts sitting around somewhere...

The question is would Kidman drag Mysterio down, or would Mysterio pull Kidman up? I liked these guys as a team back in the day. Maybe it would work again.

WWE is hiring someone to ensure continuity (the job was on hotjobs for 2 days... I applied) by looking back at old tapes and creating biographies. Putting those guys as a team against Angle/Benoit would be a step in that direction (as long as Angle and Benoit are the kind of team that only uses each other as a means to a nefarious end).

Well didn't Jericho and Benoit hate each other before getting paired up? I thought they had the whole "I really hate you, but I'll hate you a lot more if you make me lose the belt" deal going on.

Benoit/Angle would work as long as they did it like in the Angle/Benoit vs Billy/Chuck match. They hate each other, but they're made to be each other's partner, and they're damn sure not going to lose the match. So they're always trying to out-do each other, and more often than not trash-talking each other. It would be a really different tag team match dynamic if every week, these two came out and defended the belts, but always got in each other's faces. I'd watch.

Plus that'd put Kurt as a grand-slam champ, right?

Maybe, Only if the Smackdown belts could somehow be counted as the WWE tag belts.

“Well didn't Jericho and Benoit hate each other before getting paired up? I thought they had the whole "I really hate you, but I'll hate you a lot more if you make me lose the belt" deal going on.”

Well... difference is, they weren't feuding with each other immediately before pairing up. They started getting a few mutual enemies, and started saving each other's butts a few times. Benoit turned face, feuded with Kurt Angle, and then the Benoit/Jericho team won a Tag Team Turmoil match to become #1 contenders to the WWF Tag Team Title.

And then, of course, they gave me one of the greatest mark-out moments of all-time by defeating Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H to win the WWF Tag Team Championship. I daresay that twenty years from now, when I look back on my favorite wrestling moments, that moment will still be at or near the top.

But, anyway... the difference between the Benoit/Jericho pairing of 2001 and the current Benoit/Angle pairing is that Benoit and Angle are feuding. Right now. There hasn't been any period of those two guys helping each other against mutual enemies-- they've been beating the shit of each other and costing each other matches. And now Stephanie is forcing them to tag together, and she said they'd damn well better get along or she'll suspend them for a year without pay.

I may be in the minority about this, but I think this is a really, really cool angle. Forcing enemies to tag together-- especially two guys as awesome as Benoit and Angle-- has always been sweet to see. Reminds me a lot of the Lethal Lottery they used to have in WCW. Only those partners usually ended up beating the shit out of each other. In this case, they'd damn well better get along.

I think it's great. I think it's equally great that SmackDown! is getting their own Tag Team Title, although I agree that RAW's titles should ride a defector to SmackDown, and RAW should get a new set. (Maybe the WCW Tag Team Title.)
