I should just love RVD.

He's definitely a cutie, & way up there on my Cute Tushie ranking. I like the concept of having somebody who's more relaxed (contrasting all the "I'm the baddest SOB" guys). I love the karate-style stuff & the serious flexability moves. I laugh when he counters the big-bad promos with a sense of humour.

Why is this going wrong for me?

That's not just a rhetorical question. I really am not sure why he loses me. There are wrestlers that I'm so-so about (& that other people seem to love), but I generally have some kind of idea about what it is that doesn't work for me.

Take the PPV for instance. Trips is my boy, & they did a good setup, so I'm looking forward to the match. I really liked the promo in the locker room. The first section of the match, where Rob & HHH were playing was very fun. The middle of the match was nice, solid -- I remember thinking to myself, "I'm liking Rob. This is cool." Then somewhere in (maybe) the last 5 minutes of the match, I started to lose it with him. I think it was that willing suspension of disbelief that we talked a little about in another thread.

The only thing I can think of is that when Rob either gets tired or gets too focused on some upcoming flashy move, that he loses attention to all the other detail things. And that in turn loses me. I don't know -- that's just a guess. Anybody got any ideas about what my deal is here?

I agree about RVD: he's cute as a button, he's got a very squeezable tush, he has some of the best ring gear in the biz, he has great moves and he's starting to cut some decent promos...but there is something missing.

The only thing I can pin down about him is that sometimes he just doesn't seem to care about anything but the moves. Not about selling, or making segues, or match psychology. He's marking time until the next Rolling Thunder.

IMO, this is a problem with a lot of wrestlers who have concentrated on acrobatics. It's like a movie with great special effects and a crap story. You go "Wow", then forget all about it a minute later. Bumps and flips are truly memorable only when paired with a strong story and timed for maximum effect.

When RVD gets in the ring with someone who makes him pay attention ALL the time, such as the Undertaker, he catches fire. Remember the few matches they've had? Those really worked, because RVD looked like he was fighting for his life, not doing an acrobatic show.

Yeah, I think you've got it. There are guys who can get him to stay "in the moment" in a match -- I do remember Undertaker with RVD as being good throughout. That also explains why I occasionally do enjoy the hell out of him. Good call.
