| #1 Posted on 5.9.02 1649.01 Reposted on: 5.9.09 1659.01 | I wasn't sure if I should put this here or over in music, but I picked this one because I'm, um, better known over here.
From the Washington Post (although I got it from thismodernworld.com):
Because everything is about television and "American Idol" is the hottest thing on TV this summer, tonight's winner of Fox's create-a-pop-star competition has been invited to sing the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 11 -- a day of mourning for the more than 3,000 victims of last year's terrorist attacks.
At the place where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a dream" speech, where Marian Anderson was invited by the FDR administration to sing "America" after the Daughters of the American Revolution snubbed her for being black, the "American Idol" winner will make his or her appearance during the day-long ceremonies commemorating the first anniversary of the attacks -- six days before the first single by the newly minted superstar is released.
---
Is it just me, or are they treating this like sweeps week? I have class all day Wednesday, and I'll be very glad to be far away from a television. | Promote this thread! | | Jaguar

| #2 Posted on 5.9.02 1656.00 Reposted on: 5.9.09 1659.02 | My response to this off the top of my head:
"Kudos to Bob from marketing. He did a bang-up job on this cross-promotion and lets all give him a hand. Now let's get to work on this 9/11 holiday thing. If we can make this into another holiday, I think we can all see a very nice cash cow in our future. Hell, we've already got 20 million "Have a happy 9/11!" cards ready to roll, so lets go buy us a few congressmen!"
Then I realize that sometimes I can be too cynical, and not everyone is in it just for the money.

I also suspect that some politicians who appear at the ceremonies may be doing so in the hope that their constituents will think they're nice people and vote for them as a result!!! | Bizzle Izzle

| #4 Posted on 5.9.02 1730.23 Reposted on: 5.9.09 1754.46 | I just really, really, REALLY hope that girl remembers the words and does not butcher one of my absolute favorite songs. I think it's very cheesy and in poor taste, but I am not surprised by anything Fox does anymore. For weeks now I've been reading all these articles about how the networks are going without commercials, and the broadcasts will be toned down and more somber for 11 Sep. Oh well, I guess not.
I won't be watching it anyway, so I'll have to read the recaps and see how she did. I'll be skipping most, if not all, of the broadcast ceremonies. 11 Sep 01 is not a day I want to re-live, especially with garbage productions like "American Idol" | Tom Dean

| #8 Posted on 5.9.02 2317.52 Reposted on: 5.9.09 2329.01 | I'm not sure why I'm suppose to care who sings the national anthem at this 9/11 thing. From what I understand, she has talent, so it shouldn't be a problem.
What is pissing me off is everyone looking for a reason to be offended about something over 9/11. (in fact, I'm pretty much tired of 9/11 all together, enough all ready!) I'm probably going to avoid the TV's 9/11, as I've seen the buildings fall way too many times all ready, and I think just about everything that can be said has been said. And quite frankly, we've had more than enough ceremonies about this (though if that's what the victim's families want to do, fine by me, but I don't have to watch). I keep hearing about moving on, when are we going to do it? | Jaguar

But it really does kind of piss me off that it seems like they're going to commercialize the whole thing. If they don't, and she just sings, then it's cool, I guess. Then I'll be able to say, "It could've been worse. It could've been Britney."
