Did anybody catch Guns N Roses at the Mtv VMA's?

They sounded pretty good (that is, if you are into Axl's way of singing & running) but what a bunch of freaks they are!!

And back then people said Slash looked odd with his top hat.
Now there is a guy with a KFC bucket on his head!

I have heard some new material over the last decade *grin* but I never really saw the entire line up..

Anyways, hearing them do Welcome to the Jungle brought back lots of old memories and a even a bit of sadness because it looks so weird to see Axl stand there, and then 4-5 complete strangers playing along with him.

"Round One" indeed...

I thought the show was fantastic, when you take into account all of the shit Axl had to go through to be there. People are saying that he's lost his voice, he can't rock anymore, blah blah blah... Think about it this way. They most likely didn't have a decent sound check, as they arrived while the show was already going on. This was Axl's first performance in front of a U.S. crowd in about a decade. Nerves gotta be runnin real high for him. Axl was fucking around with that damn in-ear monitor the whole time. He ain't used to that shit; he always has stage monitors instead. When your monitors aren't working right, there's no possible way to harmonize with the band. All you hear is noise. All in all, I marked out BIGTIME to see Axl return to the stage. He's still the best example fucking rock and roll that we have left in this country. Fuck Aaron Lewis, fuck the dude from Incubus, and FUCK CREED.

Viva AXL.

Weird looks aside, Buckethead (yes, that's really what he calls himself) can fuckin' play! He used to do a lot of stuff onstage with Primus that impressed me.

And ditto on the FUCK CREED.

GN'R have played a handful of U.S. shows over the last couple of years (new year's in Vegas, etc.) and arrived in NYC on Tuesday, so they had some decent time to rehearse.

Buckethead has put out some cool stuff in the past. Unfortunately, you have to filter through a lot of techno noise to get to the blazing guitar parts on a lot of his solo work.

Slash was not the epitome of a great guitarist, but he and Axl were GNR.

WyldeWolf1 sez:

No arguments here, but I heard that Izzy Stradlin wrote all their good material ... which is why the wheels fell off when he left the band. Which might also explain the, ummm, lack of decent new songs since 1992.

If I'm correct, didn't they say Izzy was up there as well?

As for the performance: daaaaaamn. At first, I wondered when he turned into a bloated Kid Rock, but he's still got the pipes.

Damn! I set the VCR to tape the show last night, but didn't consider that it was an awards show and would run over adn the tape ran out during eminem's best video speech. Shit! Luckily, they'll replay it again and again. Was "Welcome to the Jungle" the only song they played? How did the crowd react? I would've gone nuts. God, remember when Axl did "Free Fallin" with Tom Petty at the VMAs in 88 or 89?

Three times tomorrow, Olaf.

Also, they did three songs: Welcome to the Jungle, some slower one, and Paradise City.

Danke... I'll keep that in mind when I make the CD.

Also, just as a random question, does anyone have any complete tapes of older VMA's? I have the 1995 and 2002 VMA's, but no way to copy them, so you'd have to do B&P.

Buckethead is the man. I was so happy to see him on stage. I remember reading on Rocknews.com last year he was kicked out of the band, but I guess he is back. You do have to get through some techno beats to hear him shred, but man, he can shred with the best of them. His blazing solo at the end of paradise city was the highlight of the show for me.

In case anyone cares who the other guys in the "new guns `n roses" are, i have no idea who the bassist or third guitarist is, but the Drummer is Brian "Brain" Mantia from Primus, the guitarist with the goth look going on is Robin Finck, formerly of Nine Inch Nails, and the keyboardist is Dizzy something, he's the only original member besides Axl.

Ditto on the FUCK CREED sentiment, but leave the incubus boy alone, he be good.

The Incubus boy is fine by me for being an awesome lyricist. If he writes the songs, that is. :)

Wasn't Tommy Stinson from the Replacements supposed to be the bass player at some point for the retooled Guns, or am I just smoking too much crack and imagining things again?

Okay, just saw them play, and it was exciting to see Axl, but...that's not Guns n Roses. That was the Axl Rose Band. It can't be GnR without any of Duff, Izzy, or Slash.

That was him, he was there on-stage wearing a suit.

Izzy Stradlin' wasnt there, they mentioned Dizzy Reed, the keyboard/piano player who joined them in 92..
I always got the impression back then that he was in the band because Axl wanted him, so the fact that he is still with them proves that.

Madagascar..ah what a great song. I have it on my Rock in Rio 2001 cd..

And for those that are interested what Axl thinks of his new and of his old band members visit gnronline.com or something like that (i always forget the name) where he tells his side of the past ten years.

Man, I don't know, and this is just my opinion but I thought that performance SUCKED the big one! Axl sounded worse than Jericho on the second song and struggled through "Jungle." Needless to say I wasn't impressed.

And while not a Creed fan, I don't really have a problem with them. I'll agree their songs get waaay too much airplay, but upon first listening I kinda' like 'em.
