I noticed that a few regulars on this board are from the San Diego area. Well, it looks like my job will be taking me to that area in 2003. Since I've never been there, I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice or web links on the city? Specifically, info on decent areas to live. I'm pretty flexible on where I can live, so I'm just looking for a decent neighborhood, without spending 2K a month on rent.
Thanks in advance!

Hmm, well I suppose it depends on what you are looking for, a house, an apartment, condo... if you have pets, what you think a decent neighborhood is.

The SDSU college area has decent rents, isn't a horrible place, but it does have college kids up at all hours of the night partying on weekends.

We can probably give you a better idea if you're more specific on what your needs are.

clairemont's not too bad. it's centrally located and there are lot's of complexes so i think semi affordable housing is available. pretty much all the stores you want to go to are within a 5-25 minute drive. I used to live in East San Diego (30th-El Cajon nieghborhood.) it's kind of rough but there are pockets of niceness and it's got less of that hectic atmosphere that the rest of the city has. If you can find a place, ocean beach and the misssion/pacific beach areas are way cool.

Yeah, I guess I could be more specific. I'm looking into renting an apartment at this point. I'm just trying to get an idea of decent areas to start my search.

Thanks again for your help!

All of the places that BWD has mentioned are worth looking into.

http://homebuyingnet.uniontrib.com/rn/main.html

should help you out a bit. The brown bit is where *I* would focus a search, avoiding North Park for sure. Though punching in a rent range of between 750 and 1000 I was finding mostly Mission Valley, Clairmont, and College.

The yellow section towards the water from there has Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and La Jolla which are all nice. La Jolla is generally expensive though I did have a lot of single bedroom apartments coming up on the search for a reasonable price, so you might check those out as well.

http://www.rent.com/search/map/19/46/

has a good interface that allows you to see sample units, but most of the places that list on rent.com are big complexes, so you might get better prices at some of the smaller locations.
