With the WNBA playoffs underway... does anybody give a rat's ass?

Outside of staring at Sue Bird bounce up and down the court, the WNBA is a non-blip on my radar. But someone has to be watching, otherwise it wouldn't have survived six years. Right? Right?

I keep track of who the champions are, and how the Fever are doing. (1-0 in the first round against New York, go Fever!) Other than that, I don't particularly care. Probably haven't seen a WNBA game for a couple of years now.

Has it really been 6 years? I'm surprised they still have TV Deals on major networks, because, like you said, I didn't think anybody was watching but lesbians.

EDIT: Well, you didn't say the lesbians part, but it is a big concern on the league's part I heard.

Leave it to TheBucsFan to provide an olive branch of peace to the carpet-preffering communities out there. Seriously, ROFL.

And I think the only reason they have TV still is the fact that they're run by the NBA, and therefore leech some of that 'street cred' off of said Association.

It's so funny to me how the very existence of the league seems to evoke anger in so many (obviously always male) people. Look, here's the deal... Do the teams make a profit? No, they don't. But it's not a bad deal for the arenas, who at least get some basketball during the NBA offseason. And the player salaries are very low. The fans that they do have are extremely devoted, and they also tend to be financially well-off (the "soccer mom" types), which is very important.

If women's basketball ever becomes a big deal, this effort will definitely pay off. David Stern and the NBA are thinking 30-50 years into the future, while the guys who run the other sport you play with a round ball can't figure out what to have for lunch today. Whether it'll work or not, I don't know, but I like the approach.

Whoa, the WNBA? There is a WOMEN'S Professional Basketball League? Well ain't that the livin' end?

Let me reorganize my priorities:

1) Check out the 12-man roster of the Memphis Grizzlies
2) Watch the new Mary-Kate and Ashley flick, tissues and hand-cream at the ready
3) Worship at the altar of Bob Ryder
4) Watch Sportscenter for LPGA highlights
5) Iron my Pippen jersey
6) Set VCR for Avacore infomercials
7) Download new Anne Murray CD off of Kazaa
8) Poke out my eyeballs with a rusty fork
9) See how Jeff Gordon is doing (as well as all of my other fave NASCAR drivers)
10) Take a look at this WNBA thing

I don't know if it's fair to say only lesbians watch. I'm guessing a lot of young girls like seeing girls play basketball. But yes it is brutal.

The only female sport that I will sit there and watch an entire match is Female Tennis (I've actually gone watch it live). Yes A LOT of hot foreign chicks, but a more exciting game then the men's and better personalities.

Well, to answer the original question, no. And as far as women's ball in general goes, probably no one outside of Connecticut and Tennessee. And at least up here, we're a UConn state. The Blizzard was probably the most financially successful ABL team because it was where all the UConn players went after they graduated.

The thing that pisses me off about the WNBA isn't the league itself. It is the fan's who bitch because it doesn't get the ratings and endorsements the NBA does. I might be wrong but don't women make up more than half the population? So women don't watch the WNBA or the ABL when it existed and somehow that's men's fault.

Political correctness rears its ugly head. You see, a lot of the PC-ified fans beleive that

1) Women's basketball is as good as men's basketball.
2) Women should have the same opportunity to get the money as the men; and
3) Lisa Leslie should make as much money playing 32 games a year plus the playoffs in America's second largest market to play a game nobody watches as Shaquille O'Neal does playing 82 games a year plus playoffs in America's second largest market to play a game that is ridiculously popular around the world.

I really have no use for women's basketball. NCAA Division I ball gets decent around tourney time, but even then there are some brutal games to watch. If it isn't UConn vs Tennessee, I generally don't give it the time of day.

I have gone to several games each year (Phoenix Mercury) since the league came into existence with my daughter, who is really into it. Yes, there are a lot of lesbians there, but they are really trying to cater to the family.

Is the basketball as good as the mens? No, of course not. I do enjoy it, however, since I can relate to it better (being 5' 10" with white man's disease :>)

But, most important of all, my daughter enjoys it. It has given her incentive to play basketball, just like I played baseball as a kid after my Dad took me to numerous Cubs games growing up.

Does Sue Bird actually bounce very much? I never noticed.

Not that I watch or anything.

Definitely put me in the "wish it would curl up and die" category. 5 quick reason why:

1) It wastes valuable SportsCenter time.
2) After watching men's pro, college, and even some high school basketball, it's just plain boring.
3) Their lack of success is somehow blamed on me (see Dahak's comment).
4) Female announcers suck. Sorry, had to say it. It's not that they're not knowledgable about the game or how to call it. There's a reason male announcers are almost always baritones: it's appealing to the ear. When I hear a female announcer, an image of a nagging mother/wife comes to mind.
5) It pre-empts other programs. I'm not even sure I want to watch whatever they are, I just know I'd rather see them when I'm channel-surfing than WNBA games.

EDIT: grammar

Yes, their announcers are the most godawful thing. Pam Ward is cut-rate to begin with, as is Tafoya, and that other old blonde woman who does color with Ward is the worst announcer I've heard in my life whose last name doesn't end with Schiavone.

Women's basketball at its very top level is VERY good. The team they sent to the Olympics at Atlanta I believe was one of the best teams I had ever seen (they actually played 50 games or so leading up to the Olympics, so they had actually gelled into a team, unlike the male Dream Team).

The problem is that the top level is not very big, and the drop off is like a cliff, very deep. In college, that means UConn vs. TN pretty much, and maybe a random team or two. Otherwise it is pretty ugly. And the WNBA probably has too many teams right now for the limited talent. I just can't get into it.

Also put me in the category of pissed off at those who seem to think it should be my civil duty to watch WNBA, whether I like it or not. Don't tell me what I should and should not be a fan of. And yes, the female announcers aren't very good for the most part.

Ok a few things...

1) The WNBA.
I personally don't care to watch, although I did watch a few Sue Bird games, not just because she's cute, but because she is a pretty awesome baskeball player. And I also watched the All Star game to see what else they had to offer (that Sacramento guard looks like a pretty good player too). Wasn't impressed by a whole lot. But, most of the teams that have teams (i think) are pretty large markets therefore they can probably find enough people to get fans to come to the games. Also they put too much emphasis on what's her name slam dunking in a game, they acted as if she scored 100 points in a game which is bad for two reason. A) People always argue that WNBA is the more basic fundamental game, and if it is they don't need to start dunking. B) If you make a big deal out of something that has been done only once in the history of your league, meanwhile it's done 9 out of 10 plays in the NBA, it makes your league look far inferior.

2) Michelle (isn't that her first name) Tafoya.
Does she do college football for ESPN2? Because if that's her I'd rather listen to Bill Walton. I was watching the Colorado (my second favorite team) play Colorado State (the number 2 rival now behind Nebraska, so it was a big game) and I couldn't stand to listen.

3) Women's Tennis.
Net Hack, I'll agree with you that women's tennis is better when you get to the semi finals and finals because of all the good players they have at the top of the league. But the men's tennis is more entertaining from top to bottom because you get good exciting matches in the first round.
