I know there's a few comic book fans here so I'm curious how other people feel about the Green Lantern being gay. Here's an article from the new york times that discusses it:

Gay Green Lantern

I stopped reading most comics several years ago but this is pretty interesting to me since the writers are taking a political stance with one of the biggest characters in the DC universe. If this is old news I apologize, the article is from today's NYT.

The link doesn't let me see the article, I knew a supporting character was gay, but is Kyle gay as well? I read JLA a lot, but didn't know Kyle's gay (if he is gay)? I love comics, but don't know the answer? Anyone else out there smarter than me know?

It's been awhile since I've been reading comics, but wasn't he dating Wonder Girl/Troia/Donna Troy/whoever? And didn't he also date that green girl(not she hulk)?

Now his ring's only weakness is a Ben Affleck calendar.

The green girl is Jade, who has (had) the power of a GL without a ring until she lost it fighting her brother, the shadowy guy named Obsidian.... She is Alan Scott's daughter (he's the original GL). And the last comic I read had Kyle still dating her.

yeah, the article is only about the gay supporting character (sorry if that came out wrong). Slightly old news, but not a bad move for the comic. If anything, it adds a touch of realism to things.

just FYI, all New York Times articles require you to register to read. Most normal news articles only require the basic registration and that's free.

For the record,

GL - Kyle: not gay
Terry, Kyle's assistant: gay

Although some good pub, the article was a little too paint-by-numbers for me. I am glad that they talked to both Judd and Bob Schreck for the story to get quotes.

Hey I'm a retarted looser. i haven't read green lantern since emerald dawn so I'm not familiar with the current comic. Between that and misreading the article I got the impression GL was gay. My bad. Turns out they aren't making as bold a statement as I thought they were.

Found another story on it, which helped explain things better to me.

For me, the interesting thing was that the character was created by Real World SF's Judd! Didn't know that he got that far up the comic/cartoon ladder. Good for him.

Judd Winick had a successful syndicated newspaper strip called Frumpy the Clown (now collected in two Trade Paper Backs by Oni Press, I heartily suggest picking them up if you were a Calvin and Hobbes Fan, its about a nuclear family ((that would be a mother, father, a boy and a girl)) who end up having a bad tempered clown living with them) and the currently ongoing comic book series Barry Ween Boy Genius (also highly recomended). Not to mention his award winning "Pedro and Me" about his friendship with his Real World roommate.

Go forth and check out http://www.frumpy.com/

A-MOL, if my knowledge of 80s X-Men holds right, isn't Destiny really REALLY old and nasty? There always was a kinda lesbianish/motherish relationship between the two of them though.

Judd Winick's working both sides of the block, writing Green Lantern for DC and Exiles for Marvel.

I met him at ComicCon right when he was leaving Oni Press for DC. Nice guy, and he's done a helluva job writing both books.

Judd was on Phil Donahue's non-watched show on MSNBC last night.I didn't see it but from the clip I saw it looked like Mr.Winnick could defend himself well.

He does Exiles too? Isn't one of the Exiles gay?

Yes. Sunfire(Mariko Yoshida) is a lesbian.

While Judd's decent on the adventure-side of a comic, where he excels is in interpersonal relationships.

I don't know if it was mentioned in the Times article, but it was pointed out somewhere (other than here) that lesbians are more accepted than gay men, especially in comics, where the stereotypical demographic of comic readership (overwhelmingly young and male) is fascinated and/or titilated by lesbians (especially of the lipstick variety).

I know one of the lesbians I remember was Rainmaker from Gen13.

Is that book even around anymore?

Gen13 is getting a re-tooling and relaunch. Fairchild is the only character remaining. (*Yawn* The reason I STOPPED reading Gen13 was the constant shoving of Fairchild down the reader's throats. "She's big! She's buxom! She's a redhead! You have to want her!", to the neglect of the character that should've been the breakout, Freefall (Roxy Spaulding))

And to be perfectly accurate, Sarah Rainmaker was a bisexual who leaned mostly towards women.

Essentially the only homosexual characters I can think of in the big 2 are:

Terry, Kyle's Asst. (Green Lantern)
Northstar (Formerly Alpha Flight, now joining X-Men)
Sunfire (Exiles)

The Beast is currently leaning towards homosexuality after his secondary mutation.

If we're counting Wildstorm as part of the Big Two, then you have the most blantant examples in Apollo and the Midnighter from The Authority.
